Valencia: An Oasis on the Mediterranean!
The Valencia region of Spain is a contrast of two worlds. The first world is old Spain where lemon, pomegranate, and orange trees line the streets of the huerta, an irrigated plain that makes the area one of the agricultural marvels of Spain. The second world buzzes with the hum of modern tourism that line the cities and towns along the coast. Both areas offer visitors a glimpse of Spain's unspeakable beauty, just looking through different lenses. The coast offers a Mediterranean getaway filled with all sorts of beach and watersports activities. A day's itinerary can include swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, wind surfing-all the usual things you would expect in an area of gorgeous beaches and sunny afternoons. Inland Valencia offers wine tasting, horseback riding, hiking, and simply getting lost among the less populated central towns.
The capital of the region, Valencia, really turned Spanish hero El Cid's head. Upon seeing the combination of fertile plains and sparkling coastline, Cid said," I have seen this beautiful city and asked God to make me master of it." The city has at different times been ruled by the Greeks, Romans, Moors, and Visigoths. There is no better place in Valencia to view the town's many influences than in the Cathedral. Construction began in 1262; the entrance ways to the church have been added over the years, and are all different in architectural styles. On Wednesdays, the tribunal of Gothic Puerta de los Apostoles meets in front of the main door. For over a thousand years, this water tribunal has met here weekly to discuss disputes between the farmers over irrigation rights along the huerta. Inside the cathedral is a cup claimed to be the Holy Grail. According to local legend the cup arrived in Valencia by way of Jerusalem.
Valencia is known throughout the world for its ceramics. A 5,000 piece collection commemorating this expertise resides in the Museo Nacional de Ceramica, housed in a baroque mansion once owned by the Marques de Dos Aguas. The palace itself seems to be made of ceramic. The museum has ceramics from around the world, some of the most notable pieces made by local artists. On either side of the entrance is a carved muscled Greek pouring water from an urn, illustrating the Marques' name.
For some prime strolling time, visit the Jardines del Turia. This 6km stretch of grassy expanse along the former river bed is a great place for walking, jogging, or bicycling in the countryside. The Royal Gardens empty into the park and are another great place for an evening jaunt. Valencia also has a magnificent beach, Playa de la Malvarrosa that is bordered by the Paseo Maritimo, an area filled with lively restaurants and night clubs.
Las Fallas is a huge festival of fireworks, music, bonfires, and all-night partying that takes place in Valencia each year in mid-March. The fallas are huge paper- mache sculptures that are set aflame during the celebration. The festivities include paella cooking contests, parades, open-air concerts, bullfights, and displays by local artists.
Down south, along the Costa Blanca, sits the picturesque harbor town of Alicante. This beach resort community combines sand and surf with historical sight-seeing opportunities. The Castillo de Santa Barbara sits majestically perched overlooking the city. The castle dates from the 16th century and offers a panoramic view of the area. Inside the castle is a collection of contemporary Spanish sculpture called the Colleccion Capa. The Museo de la Asegurada is the home of an excellent collection of modern art. Included are works by Dali, Miro, and Picasso. The museum is housed in the oldest building on Plaza Santa Maria, a main thoroughfare of Alicante.
A vacation in Alicante would be incomplete without taking advantage of the Mediterranean. The beach at Playa del Postiguet is a great spot for soaking up some rays and taking in the scenery around the Alicante harbor. A little further south, Playa de San Juan is a series of beaches that are less crowded, and are a haven for wind surfers. Boats leave Alicante harbor taking visitors to Isla de Tabarca, located about 11 nautical miles off shore. This area is great for getting away from the madding crowd, and has great spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.
A vacation in the Valencia region can encompass just about any activity you can imagine. Spend a day along the beach, watching the ships come and go out of the harbor. Walk the cobble stone streets and dabble in the local paella. Visit historic museums and art galleries. Venture out into the interior of the region and cycle through vineyards and sample an untested vintage. However you choose to spend a Valencia vacation, you couldn't have made a better choice!
