The North Country: Great Britain's Scenic Wonderland!

A visit to the North Country of Great Britain is a vacation in one of the most storied sections of all of England. The region has been the literary inspiration for authors like the Bronte sisters and Alfred Lord Tennyson. It is an area best explored on foot, either in the cobblestone streets of some Medieval town, or in the pastoral beauty of some undiscovered back lane. A vacation in the North Country will be a rich experience of sight-seeing, shopping, or just as a spectator in the beautiful countryside.

York, located in the Yorkshire Region, is an unbelievably beautiful city, full of historical attractions, museums, excellent shopping spots, and more eye-popping scenery than one can fathom. One of the most beautiful and historically important of York's sites is York Minster, a Gothic church with over 800 years of stained glass windows. York Minster has been at the center of British religious and political life since the time of the Romans. Over 2 million people visit the Minster each year, either as tourists or religious pilgrims. The stained glass windows are some of the largest and most beautiful in the world. One of the best museums in England can be found at the National Railway Museum, the first national museum built outside of London. Visitors can see how Queen Victoria traveled in style, and get an up close and personal tour of how steam powered trains work. There are more than 40 locomotives on display in the museum, which is housed in a former railway depot. History buffs will want to visit the Jorvik Viking Centre, an homage to the Viking City, discovered many feet below ground level, that has been reconstructed as it stood circa 948. Visitors ride "time cars", which take you back to 1067 when the Normans sacked the city. You will pass by faithfully modeled Vikings, until you reach the Finds Hut, a museum housing hundreds of Viking artifacts.

While in the North Country, you would be remiss if you did not visit Hadrian's Wall, a fortress built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in A.D. 122 to protect the frontier. The wall extends for about 73 miles, and stretches between the North Sea to the Irish Sea. A large portion of the wall is located within Northumberland National Park, and tours are given by the park service of the interesting historical points along the wall. One of the sites, Vercovicium, was a fort containing the only Roman hospital found in England, and has been substantially excavated. The park has over 400 square miles of land nestled along the Scottish border. Hiking enthusiasts will want to trek part of the Pennine Way; the trail snakes over 80 miles of the park's terrain, and offers incredible scenery to go along with well-marked hiking trails.

Another can't-miss visit during a vacation in the North Country is the Lakes Region. This area is one of the most beautiful in all of Great Britain. Many of the Romantic poets have used the Lakes Region as inspiration for some of their work. A few of the writers who have tried to describe the region's beauty include William Wordsworth, John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelly, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The centerpiece of the region is the Lake District National Park, a sprawling area of over 880 miles of rivers, lakes, mountains, and forested lands. The park was protected under an act from Parliament in 1951 in order to preserve its scenic beauty. This is a hiking paradise. Trails direct walkers on treks ranging from leisurely strolls through the wilderness, to mountain hikes that should be attempted only by the most experienced of hikers. The park's lakes also are a haven for boating and aquatic aficionados. Just pick an activity. The Lakes Region will not disappoint!

The North Country is a vacation for all those seeking solace and inspiration from a trip to Great Britain. You will be moved by the power of the great cathedrals. You will be amazed by the museums and art galleries. Your wallet will be a bit less heavy as you seek out that perfect souvenir, or plop down some ready cash for a hand-carved antique. Your taste buds will thank you as you visit the region's excellent restaurants. Your lungs will be happy as you soak in the fresh air that hangs over the countryside like a down comforter. The North Country is a feast for the senses. How big is your appetite?
