Further Details for the chateau / country house in Rome & Lazio, Italy
Welcome in Tuscia the Etruscan's Land. Tuscia, name that evokes ancient memories, represent the province of Viterbo, which is spread between Rome, Tuscany, the Tyrrenian sea and Umbria: the native land of Etruscan civilization, rich in Romans ruins, with scattered fortresses and medieval centre embellished with Renaissance and Baroque villas and palaces. A wealth that is distant the more crowded tourist centres, in a land where farming is still the most relevant aspect of the local civilization. The hearth of Tuscia is Viterbo, enclosed within well-preserved walls dating back to the early 1000. Its several monuments include “Palazzo dei Papi” (Popes Palace), seat of the historical conclave of the thirteen century, where in the neighbouring area Villa Lante, in Bagnaia, worth visiting, as well as jewel of Roman Baroque – the village of S. Martino al Cimino. There are also several historical and archaeological centres, such as Tarquinia and Tuscania, Norchia, Vulci, Ferento and medieval such us Bagnoregio, Caprarola.
The lake of Bolsena. The volcanic lake, the greatest of Europe and the 5th one for its dimensions in Italy, is a few km. North to Viterbo. A road 60 km. long surrounds it with a breathless panorama. Among the various tourist attractions, the below mentioned are those with a cultural and archaeological purpose; as a matter of fact on the lake's shore followed one another the Villanoviana, Etruscan and Roman civilization, while the medieval period left its important mark in the small near villages. Also the customary villages' festivals and the cookery are very interesting; many people instead choose the lake simply to have amusement practising sailing, windsurf and fishing.
Civita di Bagnoregio. Civita (city) as the oldest part of Bagnoregio is called, is now completely isolated from the plateau to which it was once united by a ridge. The only access to Civita is through a light modern pedestrian bridge leading to the only remaining gate (Porta di S. Maria). The gate is protected by a tower and it is decorated with relief's . Cars cannot reach Civita and one immediately after having crossed the gate realizes how much the site gains from this fact. The church of S. Donato was the cathedral of Bagnoregio until 1699, when this role was assigned to a new church built in the safer area where most of the inhabitants had moved. It has an elegant Renaissance façade while the interior is medieval. Today Civita is springing up anew. The difficulty of access which caused its almost total abandonment, today attracts people who look for a quiet buen retiro (good retreat). Most of the medieval houses in the central area of Civita have been restored in recent years.
