La Défense is at the western end of Paris' historical Axis, which starts at the Louvre museum and takes in the Champs-Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe. Direct to Versaille's Castle. The district is named for the statue, 'la Défense de Paris' which was built in commemoration of the defence of Paris during the 1870 Franco-Prussian War.
