Padova (Padua) PADUA - The urban structure has remained almost the same over the centuries: narrow streets, arcades, monumental squares. Padua changed drastically in the 13th century: the foundation of the University, the construction of the Palazzo della Ragione and Saint Antonio’s Basilica, the first town walls. They have remained Padua’s symbols up to today. In the 14th century, Padua reached the height of its political and military power under the seignior of the Carrarese. It became the centre of humanistic and Renaissance culture and a point of reference for artists and men of letters. Prato della Valle, one of Europe’s largest and most famous squares, was built in the 18th century. The surroundings of Padua are famous for their artistic, archaeological, cultural and natural heritage:many villas and castles that embellish the area, churches and monasteries, walled towns of Monselice, Este, Montagnana e Citadella, watercourses and rural houses.
