Palaia apartment Rental Property Information
A delightfully sunny, colourful apartment in the Borgo di Colleoli, one of the most beautiful country resorts in Tuscany. As a romantic getaway it has immense appeal. In the corner at the top of an old building, it has stunning views, in one direction across the hills towards Florence and in the other towards the magnificent 18th century villa that is the centre of the estate. The sitting room has windows on two sides. There is a large double bedroom and bathroom, a small separate kitchen, all reached from a long hallway. It is on two levels, with the hall, kitchen and bathroom three steps higher than the main apartment. At the foot of the staircase leading to the apartment is the Enoteca, serving refreshments, wine or full meals, and in the villa is the Borgo's fine gourmet restaurant. Two large swimming pools are close by, in one direction the larger upper pool in a secluded setting, and in the other the family pool which is heated and has fine country views. There is also a spa pool.

Borgo di Colleoli is in the hills south-east of Pisa. The nearest village is Palaia, an architectural gem built along the narrow spine of a steep ridge. Getting to Pisa, Lucca, Volterra, San Gimignano and Florence is easy, all within an hour's drive. The nearest big town, Pontedera, has rail connections to Florence (30 min) and Pisa (15 min) as well as a full range of modern shops and supermarkets. The surrounding countryside with its many remote hilltop villages and a picturesque landscape that seems to have surprises around every bend is there to be explored. A good golf course is 15 minutes away. There are many superb restaurants within easy reach. A car is recommended (Pisa Airport has a wide rental choice) but there is also a reliable taxi service. If you do not know Tuscany the Borgo is a great introduction to a region at the heart of European civilisation, and if you know it well you will find few more satisfying places to base your stay. It's romantic. Honeymooners are welcome.

| Notes: | The apartment is very bright and well-ventilated. There is a very comfortable sofa bed in the sitting room, designed to sleep two people. In a high-summer heatwave there is excellent air-conditioning, and similarly full central heating in the depths of winter. The weather is usually pleasant and sunny the year round, and even in the heat of summer the Borgo's hilltop location attracts gentle cooling breezes. The kitchen is equipped with a four-ring hob and microwave. A wide rising shelf can be made into a table top. The apartment, although well-fitted and modern, is in an ancient restored building, and is reached via the original stone staircase. Being on the second floor, it is not wheelchair accessible, and there are also steps within the apartment to the sunken sitting room and bedroom, and from the hallway to the kitchen. The location is peaceful. There is ample private parking space close to the entrance of the Borgo. Free wi-fi Internet access is available at the Gatehouse. |
Further Details for the apartment in Tuscany, Italy
For five centuries the Borgo di Colleoli flourished as a wine-producing and olive-growing estate in the hands of the D’Agostino family. Today 68 individually-designed, privately-owned apartments have been created in the restored old buildings, the principal of which is the elegant family villa, now a small, all-suite hotel. There are two big swimming pools, one heated with open views across the hills, the other secluded. There are two restaurants, one an enoteca where anything from a glass of wine or an espresso to a full meal is available from early morning to late evening, the other where fine Tuscan dining is available each evening. At weekends there are often special attractions. Beyond the landscaped grounds the former D’Agostino estate extends across a vast tract of hills, valleys woods and open countryside, offering walking, biking and riding. There is a golf course 15 minutes away, and for the really adventurous paragliding at Forcoli, a national centre, with lessons available
The apartment is on the second floor of a former agricultural building, and has a main room with views on two sides, a bedroom with a window looking east towards distant mountains, with the landscape of vineyards, olive groves, hilltop villages and villas little changed since the Renaissance. There is a small kitchen equipped with refrigerator, microwave and hob and bathroom with shower and bidet. It is very light and airy, but if it gets too hot there is full air-conditioning. The bedroom has a large double bed, ample wardrobe space and a chest of drawers. The main room also has a sofa bed that can sleep two, a dining table and easy chair. There is a TV and DVD player, and the television signal includes BBC World, Sky and CNN. The apartment is on two levels, with the hallway, kitchen and bathroom three steps higher than the main area. There is also a spacious hallway leading from the entrance door, with storage space. The apartment's position is secluded and quiet, yet convenient.
The Borgo, nestling on a hilltop in the peaceful Tuscan countryside is located a little more than half-an hour from Pisa, the principal airport in Tuscany, with direct access to most parts the UK, mainland Europe and even New York. Florence, San Gimignano, Lucca, Volterra and Mediterranean beaches can all be reached within the hour. The nearest big village is Palaia, within walking distance, and one of Tuscany’s most enchanting hidden treasures. The countryside surrounding the Borgo is studded with many fine restaurants offering the splendours of Tuscan gastronomy and viniculture. The world-famous vineyard of San Gervasio is less than two miles from the Borgo. The nearest big town, Pontedera, is fifteen minutes away down in the Arno valley, and has hypermarkets, multiplex cinemas and department stores, as well as a railway station with frequent fast trains to Pisa and Florence. Before Pontedera is access to the Fi-Pi-Li, the arterial road that links Florence, Pisa and Livorno.
