Activities/Area Snorkeling, Swimming, Sea Turtle and Dolphin Encounters, Museums, Botanical Gardens, Shopping, Biking, Hawaiian Cultural Events & Festivals, Many State and National Parks Including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Kea Observatory, Whale Watching, Helicopter Tours, Hiking, Horseback Riding, Kayaking, Scuba Diving, Fishing, Surfing, Golf, Tennis, AND Skiing (that’s right, skiing!) Kapoho is a tranquil, seaside community on the easternmost tip of the island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island. Kapoho’s balmy weather, lush vegetation and Aloha spirit are quintessentially Hawaiian, and its unhurried, laid-back atmosphere is a great antidote for the hectic pace of our times.
More about the area Kapoho's geothermic tide pools are one of the area’s most striking features. The warm, calm waters of Champagne Pond and its satellite lagoons are great spots to swim and snorkel. Green sea turtles love Champagne Pond and visit so often they've become an area mascot. Many of our guests say (and we agree!) that swimming with these noble creatures is an experience they will never forget. Pahoa, about 9 miles from Kapoho, offers plenty of options for groceries, supplies and fun shopping. Several markets, including a top-notch natural foods market and a 24 hour convenience store, a fish market, a farmer’s market, half-a-dozen good restaurants (two of which are *very* good), a live music club, video store, and an ever-changing array of colorful and offbeat shops selling hand-crafted souvenirs, tropical plants & flowers, original art and island apparel can be found in this bohemian village center. Hilo, county seat and the island’s largest city, is about 20 miles from Pahoa.
Skiing Information: If you’re looking for adventure, discovery, black sand, blue water, humpback whales, tropical rainforests, the cleanest air on earth and the true spirit of Aloha, you can find all of them here. But what sets this area apart from most island vacation spots is what you won’t find: tourist traps, huge crowds and resort prices. We hope you'll visit us soon here in “Old Hawaii” and discover our little Piece of Paradise! For me its balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surf is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud-rack; I can feel the spirit of its woody solitudes, I hear the plashing of the brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.
Golf Information: A bastion of Hawaiian history and culture, Hilo is home to museums, botanical gardens and cultural centers. Each April Hilo hosts the Merrie Monarch Festival; often called the “Olympics of Hula.” Hilo also offers supermarkets and shops, golf courses, state of the art movie theaters, many fine restaurants and a laid back Aloha atmosphere that is treasured by locals and visitors alike. Hilo is the gateway to many of the Big Island’s main attractions. At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park you’ll get up close and personal with the planet when you stand on the rim of awesome Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. Explore our galactic neighborhood from the Visitor Station on the slopes of Mauna Kea, the world’s tallest mountain and home of the mightiest terrestrial telescopes ever built, and see Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s moons with your own eyes.
