If you're looking for some excitement, any of the local outfitters can hook you up with whitewater rafting, tubing down a river, canoeing and kayaking. Two ponds on Beech Mountain are excellent trout fishing destinations. The vast network of hiking trails take you to mountain streams, rivers and waterfalls. Biking is big on Beech mountain and for good reason, world champion Lance Armstrong trained on the Beech Mountain Parkway, the steep mountain roadway that connects Banner Elk to the top of Beech Mountain.
