On the sunny slow side of Kauai, this rustic Waimea River cabin is country living! The cabin is surrounded by state land and the Waimea River, making it hard to believe you'll be only one mile up river from downtown Waimea. The acre of mowed grass is well planted with citrus, mango, and other flora. This cabin is best for a romantic couple. I had fun remodeling the bathroom with marble and granite, and adding the 200-channel, 50-free-movie TV dish. Mom lives downstream, 500 feet away in the main house -- invisible through the orchard, She's a great senior citizen and local adviser. This home is on a real quiet road with only a handful of cars throughout the day. Here it's scenic and historic -- welcome to the west side time machine! Captain Cook first landed in Hawaii -- here in Waimea, Kauai -- and sent his longboats upstream for water right to this location.

His artists drew pictures of the famous Menehune ditch, which still runs 15 feet away from the cabin -- 1,000 feet downstream into an ancient cave in the cliff face, and finally into the valley below where it still supplies native valley farmers with water. The wall has the unique feature of being made of cut square lava stones, about the size of TV sets. It's unlike stone walls anywhere else in Hawaii. Legend has it that a race of people, the Menehune, came before the Hawaiians and built it. The State Historic Menehune plaque and famous 'swinging' suspension foot bridge over the river are about 2,000 feet downstream from the cabin. We are about four miles outside the Kokee Waimea Canyon State Park boundary, but the river trail comes right by us. This is a good spot to explore the Kokee Park from because it's warmer at sea level, and it's only a quick half-hour drive (up 4,000 feet!) to the Kokee Park center.

Waimea town has two full-size grocery stores and at least a dozen good lunch shops. Dinners are limited to about three choices. I really like the Plantation Brew Pub and Restaurant. It has live local music about half the week. The beach that starts here at Waimea is actually the longest continual beach in Hawaii, stretching for 15 miles to its end at the Na Pali cliffs of Polihale. Rainfall is rare -- at an average of ten inches a year. Koloa and Poipu are about a 25-minute drive east, with lots of shops, sights, and good dining. Good Health! Write us soon.
