Supermarket, convenience store, fish market, country butcher, pharmacy, wine/liquor/beer store etc. all within a 5 - 20 minute drive). 18 hole golf within half hour. Canoe, paddles and life jackets; two bicycles and helmets provided. Fishing from the community wharf (2 minutes). Fox, deer, pilot whales, seals and a variety of marine bird life including herons and eagles are commonly seen in summer. Excellent coastal and hinterland hiking/biking and superb, sand beaches nearby. Broadband internet cable access available at the house (bring your own computer with Ethernet connection or your wireless router). Public computer and internet access, fax and scanning available at local C@P site (Community AccessPoint) 10 minutes from house.

Plenty to do on land and sea Other nearby activities include golfing, fishing, sailing, rowing and paddling - superb walking and cycling - and beach combing. All great opportunities for peak outdoor experiences with Mother Nature! The house comes equipped with two sturdy 15-speed 'adult size' bikes and helmets and a fibreglass canoe with 2 paddles and life-jackets. Sailing and fishing boat trips, with captain, can be arranged.

If you bring your own boat Stay and sail - Bring your own kayak, canoe or small craft and launch from the Ranson House private beach, on a protected harbour. Also enjoy freshwater lakes and creeks for quiet paddling elsewhere on the island, or launch your small craft at a variety of salt water accesses around the island . Arriving by sea? Moor your yacht just a few oar strokes from the back door, visit the village yacht club with launch ramp and wharf just a few minutes walk down the shore. Some of North America's finest day-sailing and cruising is right here on the Lennox Passage and the Bras d'Or Lakes.

Cape Breton/Celtic music fans Cape Breton Island is well known for its unique styles of Celtic music and some pretty hot fiddlers, strummers, pickers, singers and dancers abound. Hear them, maybe jam with them, or even join a workshop at a variety of venues throughout the island. Your musically-inclined (but somewhat challenged) hosts will help you find a ceilidh, a concert, or even a lesson. Community music festivals and performances take place throughout the summer around the island, and the incredible Celtic Colours International Music Festival happens during 10 days in mid-October.

Golf Information: Cape Breton features excellent golf courses at Dundee (a 20 minute drive from the Ranson House), Baddeck (about an hour), Cheticamp (a couple of hours) and our world famous Highland Links course in Cape Breton Highlands National Park - well worth the 2 hour drive for golfers seeking a world-class experience. Club and cart rentals available at all courses.
