Reyes Station are art galleries, antique stores, boutiques, and a new cheese creamery which recently got a two-page spread (no pun intended) in the New York Times. Several of the restaurants in the area are outstanding, including Manka's, the Olema Inn, and the Station House Cafe. Inverness is surrounded by the Point Reyes National Seashore -- with literally hundreds of hiking trails, as well as bay and ocean beaches. Enjoy tide pooling, clamming, mussel picking, and whale watching (January & March). Tennis, horseback riding, and kayaking are all available nearby, as well as biking and bird watching. Nearly 470 avian species have been observed in the park and adjacent waters. Other attractive activities might include a visit to the Pt. Reyes Lighthouse, the Rouge & Noir Cheese Factory, Johnson's Oyster Farm, or one of the area wineries. (Bring home some fresh oysters to barbecue on the deck.) Wildflower hikes are inspiring, particularly the Chimney Rock Trail in the spring.

And children love blackberry picking in summer & fall. Try swimming in Tomales bay in summer, or climbing Mt. Wittenberg by foot or horseback--not for the faint of heart! The wine country in the Napa and Sonoma valleys, San Francisco, and the quaint Russian River towns are all about a one-hour drive from the house. A viable alternative to all the above is to sunbathe on the deck, read, listen to music, or... just meditate.

What a wonderful escape. Mountain Biking was great at Samuel B. Taylor Park and the coast trail near the hostel. Ate at the Station house three times-so I guess we liked it. Here we found beauty, quiet and the crisp air with the smell of wood smoke. We made many fires in the fireplace, read, took walks, and had our own and shared thoughts.
