Visit this charming, light-filled home on St. Joseph's Island in the North Channel of Ontario's Lake Huron. Views from the lower deck peek through cedar and birch trees toward tranquil water. Upstairs, the balcony outside the master bedroom opens out onto the wide expanse of Lake Huron. Over 120 feet of private shoreline in a sheltered cove provide an extensive sandy beach for water games, swimming, kayaking, and canoeing. The house and adjacent meadow are surrounded by five acres of woods, where moss-covered walls of an old homestead are slowly being reclaimed by nature. The fragrance of the all-cedar construction permeates the house. Under the cozy window seats in the living room, games and art supplies are ready for use. On cool mornings, an efficient wood stove heats the entire space. The living room, dining area, and kitchen all face the lake. Cheerfully painted table and chairs in the dining room area are near French doors leading to the lower deck.

The beach is particularly inviting for swimming; shallow water extends pleasantly for water play. Although boats are not provided, the bay is ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and small sailboats. Motor boats and larger sailboats can be kept in the Hilton Marina, 2 miles away. In addition to the dining area inside the house, a screened porch has very large table arrangements that can accommodate 12 people at a meal. A pass-through between kitchen and screened porch make serving meals very easy, and encourage kids' cooperation in this novel arrangement. A reduced rate is available in May and September for 2 weeks stay.

A peninsula with tall stools tucked beneath it separates the dining room and kitchen. A window pass-through from the kitchen makes serving dinner on the screened porch a breeze. A butterfly sink in the corner of the kitchen faces the lakeside and the meadow simultaneously. The kitchen is custom designed, and built by master craftsmen. It's fully equipped with a microwave, stove, refrigerator, and coffee maker. The generous storage space is filled with dishes, glasses, and cooking utensils. A propane barbecue grill is on the deck. Two bedrooms on the lower floor each have twin beds and the bathroom with shower and tub is conveniently between the bedrooms. The washer and dryer are in this bathroom. The large master bedroom faces the lake, and has a queen-size bed and a half bathroom. All bed and bath linens are furnished.

Kayaks, paddle boats and bicycles can be rented in nearby Hilton Beach. You'll often see people fishing for salmon or pike there on the rock jetty. And the marina is lined with beautiful sailing craft of all kinds. Situated about 45 minutes from Sault Ste. Marie, St. Joseph's Island is the second largest freshwater island in the world. In the fall, the maple forests all over the island create a spectacular splash of beauty as the leaves turn bright red. The island is accessible from airports in Sault Ste. Marie Canada and Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, each about 1.25 hours from the house. This is a great spot for a personal or family retreat. Without TV or phone, the sounds, sights and activities of nature nourish the body and spirit. In the community nearby are opportunities for golfing, biking, concerts, personal services, traditional teachings and sweat lodges.
