Maremma is the name given to the southernmost area of Tuscany. The rolling hills of this area are famous for their unspoilt natural beauty. Typical local products are Pecorino cheese, olive oil and the local wines Morellino di Scansano and Montecucco. This is a great place to experience a rural way of life that has changed little for hundreds of years. Roccalbegna was built by the Republic of Siena as its southern outpost over 500 years ago and it's changed very little since then. It offers the following services: an exceptional trattoria / pizzeria, a bar, a butchers, a couple of well-stocked general grocers, a bank, a post office and a chemists. There's a mini-market on Monday mornings. 'Roccalbegna is one of the finest villages in southern Tuscany', The Rough Guide to Tuscany and Umbria, April 2003.

Further Details for Zolferate in Tuscany, Italy
Saturnia The hot sulfurous waters of Saturnia have been famous since Etruscan times. There are two ways of taking the waters: the 'Terme' spa hotel which offers several pools, refreshment facilities and an extensive range of spa treatments or the open air, free entry waterfall down from the village. The springs are a 20 minute drive from the apartments.
The coast & nature reserves The southern Tuscan coastline offers some of the most pristine bathing in Italy. Castiglione della Pescaia has consistently been awarded the top 'clean beach' award by the EU. If you tire of the 'ombrellone' of Castiglione and Marina di Grosseto head for the beach in the 'Parco Naturale di Maremma' for kilometre after kilometre of golden sand without an 'ombrellone' in sight and few people even in August (under an hour's drive away). The limestone cliffs of the WWF's Rocconi reserve are visible from the apartments. This is one of the WWF's largest reserves in Italy. It is home to several rare species of birds. A small fee is charged for entry. At certain times of year night visits are possible. Visit the 'Parco faunistico di Monte Labbro' to see the original wildlife of the area including wolves.
Classical Tuscany San Gimingnano, Siena and Florence are within easy reach, as are the hill top villages of Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza. Day trips to Rome are possible too.
Guest Book 27.10.07 Third time here. Always the same wonderful and nice welcome from Graham and Tuscany. Paolo Marco, Roma 07.07.07 What a wonderful interlude after a hectic week in Rome. It was great to come here to relax and chill out. It was a great base to see the southern tuscan region. Every place we have been to has its own attraction - so see it all! A very memorable week in our European holiday. Gary and Brenda, Adelaide, Australia 29.06.07 We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Zolferate was a tasteful combination of old and new and provided for all our needs. We had a wonderful trip to Montepulciano, Pienza and the lovely gardens at La Foce and also enjoyed trips to Pitigliano, Grosseto and Saturnia. Top of our list, however, was sitting on the terrace at Zolferate- butterflies, bees and beetles everywhere, lizards up to their tricks, birds, crickets and cicadas and at night as we sat outside waiting for the stars, bats and fireflies to appear. Diane and Francois, Sussex, UK
Other Activities swimming - 20 minutes to a pool, an hour's drive to the coast
