I have traveled the world and never found another place more beautiful than the North Fork of Long Island. And Southold is the heart of the North Fork. The North Fork is surrounded by water; Peconic Bay on the south, Long Island Sound on the north and Gardiners Bay to the east. Most of the old potato farms have been converted to about 50 vineyards and wineries. September is harvest time in the vineyards. September also enjoys some of the best fishing of the year. The water remains warm and wonderful for swimming, and the warm water keeps the air warm longer. The Maritime Festival in Greenport (just a 10 minute drive away) is held in September. The pumpkin harvest arrive in late September and early October. Farm stands along the local roads are brimming with local fruits and vegetables to enjoy in your vacation home or in the many fine local restaurants.
