Wellfleet is located about seventy five miles out into the Atlantic ocean on the outer end of Cape Cod and offers an abundance of quaint rural sea side character and charm. To the east is the Atlantic ocean to west, Cape Cod Bay. More than 60% of Wellfleet is in the Cape Cod National Seashore and it is the only town on Cape Cod where you can explore an Audubon Sanctuary, golf, fish, shop in an outdoor flea market, swim in the ocean, or Cape Cod Bay, or a beautiful pond, dine on fresh seafood, see a movie, square dance, go to a show at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre and never leave town!!

| Notes: | Most of Lieutenant Island is undeveloped marshland owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society and Wellfleet Conservation Trust. This has kept the Island a very private, quiet and tranquil place. There are two almost private beaches on the Island. The east beach is a five minute walk from the house and fronts Loagy Bay. It is a great launching point for kayaking or just watching the birds and fish. The west beach is a ten minute walk from the house that fronts Cape Cod Bay and offers panoramic views of the bay and shore line from Plymouth to Provincetown. You can also drive to either beach and parking is available. Lieutenant Island is a kayaker’s paradise. Large tidal salt marshes around and on the island offer many estuaries for exploring. Hiking trails wind through the marshes to remote beaches where diamondback sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs and horseshoe crabs wait for the evening of the first full moon in the spring to mate and start their next generation. |
Further Details for the house in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA
Words about Wellfleet Wellfleet is the home of the Cape Cod National Seashore headquarters building as well as a 1,000 acre Massachusetts Audubon Society Wildlife Sanctuary. Some of Cape Cod's finest ocean and bay side beaches are found in Wellfleet. The town is also well-known for its plentiful supply of shellfish, including the famous 'Wellfleet Oyster'. In Wellfleet you can find numerous beautiful clear spring-fed, ponds, fine art galleries, shops, restaurants and magnificent Wellfleet Harbor offering a constantly changing panorama of sail boats, motor yachts, sport fishing boats and trawlers. Wellfleet is an extremely diverse community with an extraordinary nautical history.
The Ocean Beaches Towering cliffs carved into sand dunes overlook the fine sand beaches along the Atlantic side of Cape Cod. As the tide comes in, the strong waves provide hours of entertainment for swimmers and surfers. As the water recedes, it leaves behind colorful rocks and seashells for the beachcomber. This area was designated as the Cape Cod National Seashore in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. Although the 40-mile uninterrupted stretch of beach is by far the main attraction, the Cape Cod National Seashore also includes hiking and biking trails, marshes, fresh and salt water ponds, forests, historic structures, and lighthouses. Most Cape Cod National Seashore ocean beaches are within 5 miles of Lieutenant Island.
The Bay Beaches Great Island is a protected ecosystem and a bay side Wellfleet treasure. Great Island was the center of marine activity in Wellfleet during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, walking trails wind between sand dunes and tidal salt marshes to the bay. Great Island is very visible from both beaches on Lieutenant Island and is accessible by boat from the island. It is about a 10 minute drive from the island and parking is available. No matter how you get there bring plenty of sun screen and wear sneakers! You can walk way out on the dunes to Jeremy Point to enjoy the sun and the solitude but pay attention to the tide! Duck Harbor Beach is the only Wellfleet Bay Beach that is not located directly on Wellfleet Harbor. Calm, warm waters, a beautiful view, and gentle dunes make this a great beach for families with small children and everyone else too! Parking and bathroom facilities are available.
Other Activities Mass Audubon Sanctuary, Cape Cod National Seashore, kayaking & much more!
