Gulf Pines Beachfront Community - A Tropical Parad Gulf Pines is a community by the beach on Sanibel Island's western side. It's natural and unspoiled with crushed shell roads and natural tropical vegetation. J.N. 'Ding' Darling Wildlife Refuge bordering it to the north and Sanibel Captiva Conservation land to the east. The community lifestyle is casual and relaxed but there's plenty to do with two swimming pools, several tennis courts, a clubhouse where activities abound during the winter season and one of the world's most idyllic beach paths leading to a shell strewn beach. The Sanibel Recreation Center is a short bike ride away with state of the art weight machines, and multiple pools with a water park featuring sprinklers and slides as well as a basketball and tennis courts.

Sanibel Island - Wildlife, Recreation, Culture There are many different outdoor activities here on the islands, including biking, rollerblading, tennis, fishing, sailing, kayaking, guided walking tours in the J.N. 'Ding' Darling nature preserve and the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation and golfing on the two public golf courses. In addition, there are a number of good restaurants and some good shopping as well as live theater, a first-run movie theater, a shell museum, an historical village, an animal rescue center and a thriving community of local artists. The Barrier Island Group for the Arts offers a multitude of activities and classes, an international film series and a distinguished lecture series. The Sanibel Music Festival in March brings some of the world's most talented chamber groups and the Opera Theatre of Connecticut to the island in March.

Florida's West Coast Sanibel Island measures roughly 12 miles long and three miles across at its widest. Little sister Captiva Island has more compact measurements of approximately four miles long and ½ mile wide. -- The toll to cross the Sanibel Causeway onto the island is $6 per car; there is no toll to return to the mainland. We are about two and a half hours from Miami, two hours from Tampa and three hours from Orlando.

Golf Information: There are four golf courses on the island. On Sanibel Beachview and The Dunes are 18 hole courses built around inland lakes. The Sanctuary is a private course on the north end of Sanibel. South Seas Resort, a four star resort on Captiva has a golf course bordering Redfish Pass on the north end of Captiva.
