Notes:

We will be available for advice on activities, dining, excursions etc. throughout your stay. Weekly maid service is complimentary. Being perched high on a mountain-side, our driveway is steep, but accessible year round, paved, with two-three parking spaces at the house and more on the driveway below. The house is suitable for the elderly if they are very fit: my father is 82 years old and braves the steep wooden steps up to the house and the spiral staircase easily; small children will need supervision negotiating both. If you get here, and need certain additional things, such as toys, children's books, high chair or crib, we will consider sharing our own growing family's personal things on a case by case basis. Boats and Kayaks are easily charted or rented close by, as are every sort of bike. Catering, shopping, delivery, outfitting and additional maid services can be provided upon request. We do have a wood stove and cast iron stove, but prefer you use our gas range and propane heat

Further Details for the house in Maine, USA

Our View and our Unique Setting: Forests below you and blueberry fields above, you look down over the lush treetops or pick your own blueberries in season above the house. All neighbors are acres away and almost completely invisible. You will have to crick your neck to see the rooftop of one of them behind you from the wide porch, and then you will only see a part of a roof. You may see bald eagles and hawks soar below you! The peace and quiet and privacy here will amaze you, and there is virtually no traffic near us as we are situated at the turnaround of a small paved road high on the slope, and at the end of a long, steep private drive. On the surrounding mountains to the Ocean, on all sides you will see nothing but forests and meadows dotted by a few fine houses in the distance with their cheerful lights at night. You see dozens of the islands on the Ocean, with Cadillac Mountain in the distance on Mt. Desert Island in Acadia National Park 50 miles away as the crow flies.

Sea, Sky, Mountains, the Area: The sunrise—if you are up for it—will sparkle on the water and sunsets will turn it a deep pink. The area provides infinite possibility for the Nature lover, sailor, historian, art aficionado, birdwatcher or stargazer. For those who long for the water there are day sails, bareboat charters (better be an experienced skipper), lighthouse trips, lobster fishing cruises and eco-tours, lobster-bakes on islands, ferries, whale-watching, kayak and rafting trips, and three to six day nautical adventures on the classic tall ships and wooden schooners known locally and historically as Windjammers. For landlubbers there are hiking trails, starting right outside your door, all over Camden Hills State Park and beyond, as well as on breathtakingly beautiful trails known only to locals, which we will share with you when you come. If you are a bird lover, you will have an overwhelming chorus of birdsong right up at the house. The night sky is amazing.

Dining, Art, Life-style: There is world-class cuisine and all manner of dining experiences, from waterfront fish-shacks to French to be had in the area, as well as the Farnsworth Art Museum, home of the Wyeth collection, and historic old harbors and quaint, busy waterfronts everywhere, filled with fishing vessels, luxury yachts from all over the world, and classic wooden sailboats. The house is equipped with wireless access and cable. Outdoor equipment includes Adirondack chairs, barbecue grill and hammock; well-behaved pets allowed upon approval. Children always welcome.

Skiing Information: There is unique family skying at the local Camden Snow Bowl in the coastal mountains 4 miles away. The Snow Bowl on 1,300' Ragged Mountain is just a short drive from picturesque Camden harbor, and a six minute drive from our house. Nowhere else in the East can you glide down challenging ski slopes while enjoying a thrilling ocean vista unknown to other Eastern slopes. The Camden Snowbowl has something for everyone. Come ski the Snow Bowl and experience 'Where the Mountains Meet the Sea.' Check it out on their site listed below; also a fun place to hike year round. You are on the slope of Mt. Pleasant here. Ragged Mountain is just the next mountain over, and you see part of it, Bald Mountain, from your kitchen window!

Golf Information: There are a variety of magnificent ocean-front golf courses in the area including that of the Samoset Resort in Rockport. View their site below. Begin your golf vacation with a course offering breathtaking ocean vistas and complete your round on one of the most challenging finishing holes in New England. With the completion of our 474 yard, par four 18th the Samoset Resort continues to be ranked one of New England's premier resort golf destinations. In 2002, the Samoset Resort Golf Club celebrated 100 years of golf. Samoset's 18-hole championship golf course will delight both the serious and recreational player. The course meanders along the coast and through the woods, boasting seven ocean side holes and ocean vistas from 14 holes. The golf complex includes a clubhouse with an indoor/outdoor grille, golf range, practice green, short game facility and bunker and private or group instruction. Samoset Resort Golf Club has been named by Golf Digest as the 'Top Ranked Resort Golf Course in New England,' and also was the magazine's choice as the No. 52 'Best Upscale Golf Course in the U.S.' Designed by Robert Elder in 1902, Samoset Resort celebrated its centennial year in 2002. The course features some of the most spectacular views of Penobscot Bay, with a granite seawall separating the golfer from the Atlantic Ocean. Samoset Resort was host to the 2001 New England PGA Section Championship and was chosen as the site of the 2002 PGA Junior Series Event.

Other Activities lobster bakes on islands; lighthouse, lobster-fishing and eco-tours; 1-6 day classic schooner cruises; sea kayaking; birdwatching; stargazing
