'The Cradle of Mexican Independence'--Guanajuato State is the pride of the Mexican Revolution. You can see much of it from the House on the Hill--Tierra Adentro. Tierra Adentro means Inner Land. In Mexican history, it refers to the undiscovered country that the Spanish had yet to conquer and Christianize, the land beyond regulation—akin to the U.S.’s frontier or Wild West. Guanajuato, in central Mexico, comprises part of that historical land and was the refuge of proud revolutionaries. The second meaning that Tierra Adentro implies is our own inner land, the unknown frontier inside each one of us.

Location Tierra Adentro is located outside of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, near the village of Atotonilco. Located seven miles northeast of the artist town of San Miguel de Allende is the small but much venerated pilgrimage church of Atotonilco. In the indigenous language of the region, Atotonilco (pronounced ah-toe-toe-NEAL-co) means ‘Place of the Hot Waters,’ and the site actually began as a hacienda with a spring, from which curative waters still bubble forth. The church is sometimes referred to as the 'Sistine Chapel of the Americas' and almost every square inch of the walls and ceilings inside the Sanctuary is covered with fresco paintings in a riotous outpouring of Mexican folk art. The murals also portray angels, archangels, saints, and demons amidst decorations of fanciful flowers and fruits.

Travel Tips San Miguel de Allende's nearest international airport is the Aeropuerto del Bajio (BJX), in the city of Leon, located 110 km (about 70 miles from San Miguel). Many visitors have found it quite simple to arrange airport pickup through one of the transportation services, Viajes San Miguel is one. These same companies also can arrange to pick you up from Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) with a four hour ride or the Queretaro airport (QRO), approximately forty-five minutes from San Miguel. Private car, van, or limousine service can also be arranged upon request. We would be happy to arrange your transportation to and from the airport.
