St Augustine, with it’s 17th century fort, horse-drawn carriages and 18th century Spanish quarter, seems more like a charming European village than a modern American city. It is located in northeast Florida, south of Jacksonville and facing the Intracoastal Waterway. Founded in 1565, St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States. Its an exceptional town with palm-lined beaches, excellent restaurants, an active nightlife, and tons of shopping. Yet, it is the history of the city that is the main draw. St. Augustine contains a remarkable collection of historical buildings, some dating as far back as the 1500s. It has one of the country’s best preserved forts, the oldest wooden schoolhouse in the country, several museums and a two-square-block, recreated Spanish village.
