Archaeological sites There are three famous Mayan archaeological sites nearby. The closest is Tulum, a stunning site set upon a cliff overlooking the Caribbean. About 40 minutes away from Playa del Carmen, it is one of the most spectacular sites because of its surroundings. Two hours away from Playa is Coba, one of the oldest sites in the peninsula and the one with the highest pyramid. Coba is a very extended site and is famous because of it has many remnants of “sacbes” or white roads, which at one time use to traverse the peninsula and join the different Mayan cities and towns. Three and a half hours away takes us to Chichen Itza, one of the most famous sites of ancient Mayan culture. One of the things it is most renowned for is that on every equinox, the shadow of Quetzacoatl, the Plumed Serpent, is seen descending the stairs of the Castle, Chichen Itza’s highest pyramid.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling One of the things the Western Caribbean is most renowned for is snorkeling and scuba diving. The second largest barrier reef runs along the Quintana Roo coast, in front of Playa del Carmen, all the way down to Belize. It is home to a large variety of spectacular marine life that swim in and out of amazing coral gardens. The crystal clear, turquoise waters of the Caribbean invite professionals and amateurs to dive into its sea and discover an unforgettable and magical world.

Golf Information: Mayakoba Camaleon golf course, less than 15 minutes from the center of Playa del Carmen, hosted some PGA tournament. This has increased the interest in golf in the region and has made the Riviera Maya the forerunner in golf tourist destinations in Mexico. There are 4 golf courses in or near Playa del Carmen.
