Further Details for the house in Maine, USA
Surrounding area Our house provides simple, private access to Main Road. Going south you can easily walk to Hutchins Island beach, where there is a great view of the outer bay, a salt marsh and fresh water pond, sandbars that reach out to the bay and also at low tide clamming. The house is less than a mile from one of the two grocery stores on the island. Less than a mile past the grocery store is a public swimming and boating area, with a tree-swing to view the sunsets. A few miles further down is a public park with tennis and squash courts, playground and soccer field. Up the hill from the park is the town library with an excellent selection of videos and puzzles to borrow. Just before the park is the Historical Society building with a gallery and a permanent island history exhibit. Going north from our house you are in easy walking distance of blueberry hill with the best view on the island. A couple of miles further is Turtle Head beach, in a cove containing the Islesboro ledges.
Other Island Highlights Heading further south on Main Road to the Dark Harbor section of the island is the second grocery store and Post Office. Further still is the Dark Harbor Shop, a deli/curio shop with to-die-for double-scoop ice cream cones. It is a must after a vigorous day outdoors, a veritable island mecca. A little further is the Dark Harbor House, the island inn and restaurant. Further still at the southern-most point is Pendelton Point beach, a beautiful spot with public facilities and out-door grills. Look for the sailboats!! In the lighthouse at the ferry landing on Gilkey Point is a mariners museum where you will see some of the seafarers in the Williams family. Near to home is Church Turn road. The Baptist Church there hosts bi-weekly forums on current topics. It is also where the first settler Shubael Williams is buried. At the end of the road is Meadow Brook pond. Everywhere you go keep your eyes open for osprey, eagles, herons, gulls and terns. Keep a watch out for the deer!
