Five-minute walk to village shops and beaches, and the commuter rail to Boston. Depending on your wishes, it's either the perfect romantic getaway, or the perfect family vacation. Enjoy the light-filled ambiance from all-white woodwork and large skylights; a gourmet-equipped kitchen, and a spacious bathroom with a brand new tub and vanity. Everything is spotlessly clean. The studio bedroom is romantically private. Upstairs, a children's loft accommodates families with young children.

You'll be right in the heart of downtown, and 10 minutes from Gloucester. Or, if you love the cold, suit up for a little winter hiking or mountain biking in our parks and woods. Either way, you'll be snug in the best German-made flannel sheets, and under a comforter made of Siberian goose down.

  • The bathroom is large and spacious, and has all brand new fixtures as well. A tiled floor assures the bathroom is always pristinely clean.

  • The main floor studio bedroom has a king-size bed that can be split into two twin beds. Skylights make the bedroom light-filled and romantic for couples. Young children love climbing the ladder to the Teddy Bear Loft, filled with teddy bears, books, toys and movies. It has twin futons, and I also have a portacrib. This cottage was designed for people who really want a well equipped kitchen, and who love having a nice big bathroom with a bathtub as well as a shower. For extra guests, I also have a Queen Aerobed and a twin Aerobed.

I grew up on the ocean in Connecticut and spent 15 years on Boston's South Shore. I've been in Rockport five years. Since arriving here, I have spent a lot of time exploring great places to visit on the North Shore and in Boston. I'm also a former travel writer who has published in 'Yankee,' 'The Boston Globe,' 'Caribbean Travel and Life,' 'The Miami Herald,' and 'Walking Magazine,' among many others. I am the author of 'Massachusetts Off the Beaten Path' and co-author of 'Hidden New England.' I have two children, a son 14 and and a daughter 17, adept babysitters and dogwalkers. If you want to know where are the best playgrounds or beaches for young children, tweens or teens, just ask me! We also have a brand new teen center with games, movie nights and live music and dances.

History of the main house My house was built in 1850 as the home of Olive Tarr, wife of one of the original founding families of Rockport, and is in the Historic District. It has a Greek Revival exterior and is surrounded by perennial gardens and flowering trees and shrubs: crabapples, a magnolia, lilacs, beach roses, enkianthus and weigela, as well as evergreens. You are welcome to use the terrace beside the house, furnished with patio chairs and tables. Sea Mist Cottage was originally a carriage house for the main house. While remodeling, I saw the holes left by enormous hinges that once held the massive doors. The carriage house later became a garage. The former owner made it into an artist's studio with eight skylights (a lot of closing when it rained). I envisioned a small summer cottage with larger skylights, which became a reality in May of 2006. I have stayed in the cottage myself, and much prefer it to my house.
