While a remote tropical isle may be the ultimate escape, you need only head to the north easternmost tip of Florida for an unspoiled, unpretentious refuge. Framed by 40-foot dunes, Amelia Island's white sand beaches are remarkably uncrowded year round, in contrast to their more southerly counterparts. You'll also find plenty of fishing—on the island and offshore—bird watching, and horseback riding, and about 120 holes of that famous Sunshine State golf. Sample 1860s military life at Fort Clinch State Park. Wind your way up narrow staircases to bastions overlooking the Amelia River, or peek into the fort's well-preserved blacksmith shop and garrison infirmary. The Amelia Island Museum of History cuts a wide swath with archaeological finds and historical paraphernalia all stuffed inside the renovated island jail.

| Notes: | The den furnishings are remarkably comfortable; the kind you find at home which you can sink right in to. The banana leaf ceiling fan in the den, the stained glass sky light, and the cathedral ceilings add a luxurious feel to the cozy decor. The dining area has ample room to seat a family of 6. The balcony is one of the few at Forest Ridge Village to receive a full-on ocean breeze. The surf can be heard from the condo. |
