Castiglione del Lago villa Rental Property Information
Built in 1918 as the residence of the 'padrone' of the surrounding farms, Villa Gioianna is a spacious country house in the Italian Liberty style. The Villa is approached via an avenue of cypresses and lime trees and sits in a mature park of 4 1/2 acres of woods, vineyards, olive groves, fruit trees and flower gardens on a hill above Lago Trasimeno. Villa Gioianna has been renovated with respect and sympathy for the original architecture and retains the warmth and ambiance of a family country home. Terracotta and hand-painted tile floors, whitewashed walls, walnut doors and wood-beamed ceilings form a simple background for the elegant but comfortable antiques and textiles decorating the rooms. A large terrace runs the entire length of the house, overlooking the neighboring vineyards, farms and villages and, in the distance, Mt Amiata and Mt Cetona. The Villa is a small working estate that produces its own olive oil, grapes, fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs.

Villa Gioianna is located near Lake Trasimeno, on the western edge of Umbria and a stone's throw from the Tuscan/Umbrian border. Nearby are the Etruscan town of Chiusi and its excellent train connections to all destinations on the Naples-Milan train line, including Rome, Florence and Orvieto. The medieval town of Castiglione del Lago, designated as one of 'I Borghi più belli d'Italia' (the most beautiful towns in Italy), is the nearest town. It sits high on a promontory jutting into the west side of the lake. Castiglione del Lago provides easy access to the superstrada linking Perugia and eastern Umbria to Siena, Chianti and western Tuscany, and is the embarkation point for one of the ferries servicing the lake islands. Within an hour's drive are many historic Umbrian and Tuscan hill towns, such as Assisi, Arezzo, Cortona, Montepulciano, Orvieto, Pienza, Perugia, Deruta, Spello and Montalcino, as well as many less well-known, but equally charming, smaller villages.

The standard rental is one week for the entire Villa. We recommend, however, a more leisurely two-week rental and will apply a discount to rentals longer than one week and to repeat guests. Pending availability, the Villa can be rented for periods shorter than one week at a “per night, per room” charge (three-night minimum) and for groups smaller than the entire Villa. Please inquire with details of your group and we will be pleased to quote you a price. Kindly visit our website for further information on cancellation and booking policies, and for current special offers (such as the Tuscany Antique Treasures Tour, Music Adventure camp) and short breaks. - A discount will be applied to repeat guests and rentals of more than 2 consecutive weeks.
A 30% deposit is taken on booking to secure your reservation. The final payment and a refundable security deposit of euro 1000 is due 10 weeks prior to your arrival, or, if your arrival is within 10 weeks, upon booking. Rates include utilities (hot water, cooking gas and electricity). Heating, if any, will be charged separately. A welcome breakfast basket of freshly-baked local pastries and bread, fruit, tea, coffee, milk, juice and homemade jam is included in your rental. Staples (such as sugar, flour, herbs & spices, paper products) will be stocked in the house prior to your arrival. In addition, guests will be offered a selection of the ripe produce in the Villa's kitchen and herb gardens, vineyard and orchard. The rental week is Saturday to Saturday, but we try to be flexible to help guests take advantage of budget airlines' midweek prices, so please contact us, the earlier the better.

| Notes: | The large kitchen is dominated by an enormous traditional fireplace for grilling meats or bruschetta and a wood burning oven for baking pizzas, but is also fully equipped with modern appliances. French doors open off the kitchen and living room to a broad rear terrace with sweeping views of the vineyards, villages and hills beyond, while the front balcony and bedrooms overlook Cortona, Castiglione del Lago and Lago Trasimeno. Guests can enjoy open air dining at several locations on the property: on the rear terrace, under a gazebo cloaked in jasmine or a pergola smothered in roses and honeysuckle, at a little stone table in the woods, or at a shaded table on the thyme patio, overlooking the woods. The swimming pool sits in an elevated position on a small rise in the olive grove, protecting it from the sirocco winds blowing from the south, but allowing fresh afternoon breezes coming from the mountains in the north. Comfortable teak steamer chairs and tables furnish the pool deck. |
Further Details for the villa in Umbria, Italy
Why choose Villa Gioianna? The most delightful activity for some at Villa Gioianna is simply contemplating the surrounding natural beauty. The Villa sits serenely against an achingly beautiful backdrop of centuries-old villages and great folds of countryside covered in vineyards, sunflowers and olive groves. In the Summer, when the air is heady with the scent of rosemary, lavender, honeysuckle and jasmine, it can sometimes be difficult to abandon poolside sunbathing for other, more strenuous activities. Nearby, however, Umbria and Tuscany offer an embarrassment of riches of art, architecture, gastronomy and stunning landscapes. We provide an oasis of tranquility where you can enjoy the gentle pleasures of a house furnished with European antiques, comfortable beds and down-filled sofas, and then venture out to explore some of the most beautiful medieval villages and towns on this planet, together containing an estimated 20% of the world's artistic heritage. Please visit our website for more info and photos.
We provide more than just a place to stay. We know your time in Italy is short and would be happy to assist you with the details that will make your stay with us special. We don't just leave you with a list of local sights and restaurant phone numbers. An English- and Italian-speaking manager lives nearby and is on call to help guests, be it a simple restaurant reservation or more complicated requests. We have a large and ever-expanding amateur knowledge of charming, hard-to-find places we can personally recommend for sightseeing, dining, wine tasting, shopping or just exploring. We work with two excellent local cooks, available upon request and payable separately, who can prepare a delicious, home-cooked meal for you or teach you some of the secrets of Umbrian cuisine. If you'd like an unusual experience or just a knowledgeable guide, we can also recommend local tour guides who know the area intimately and offer unusual excursions that take you behind the scenes of the unique lifestyle and culture of Umbria and Tucany.
Special Celebrations, Offsites and Workshops: We would be pleased to host your special event, such as a landmark birthday, wedding, wedding anniversary or family reunion, and assist you in creating a memorable celebration for you, your family and friends. By choosing to hold your next workshop or off site at Villa Gioianna, you can combine education with a relaxing atmosphere, beautiful surroundings and great food. We have hosted week-long workshops for quilters, musicians and book clubs, and weekend corporate off sites for small groups of corporate executives. Our corporate guests appreciated the opportunity to get to know their colleagues in the relaxed surroundings of the Villa and its grounds; one remarked how he particularly enjoyed the ambiance of sharing a meal around a table in front of a warming kitchen fire. Our artistic guests are inspired by the natural beauty and rich culture. We encourage artists, musicians, writers and academics to come and would be delighted to discuss a week-long or long weekend program.
Golf Information: There is a 9-hole course approximately 20 minutes from the Villa and several 18-hole courses within a hour's or so drive.
Guest Book I can't communicate to you how wonderful our trip was to your Villa. It was one of the best vacations of my life and I can't wait to come back again and again. The house is so beautiful and I have to admit it doesn't feel at all like a rental with all your personal touches and exceptional high quality in terms of what you've put in it. (MPW, NYC) The Villa's amazing location, the garden with its herbs, olive groves and vineyard, beautiful architecture and furniture, the pool . . . it's even hard to name all the elements that made my stay so relaxing and energizing at the same time. (Ewa, Warsaw) I really didn't want to leave and the whole thing was quite idyllic. The Villa really is like something out of a film -- and what you have done to it is stunning. Are you sure Jeremy Irons isn't hiding somewhere in there? (Olivia, London) What can we say? this was the most amazing week in Italy we have ever had. The Villa is so special. (Allison, David & family, London)
Other Activities wine tasting; art, history & nature sightseeing; jazz/classical/blues concerts; outdoor markets; thermal baths/spas; food festivals; folkdance festiva
