  • $1000 week, $350 weekend, $3100 month
  • $350 a weekend, $1,000 a week, will prorate. intelligent priority living. lots of books instead of dishwasher, I have an antique apron, a sponge, a sink and Biodegradable dish liquid. good linens instead of washer-dryer, you can drop it off in Middlebury at a great place, they'll have it done that afternoon. Also, like all of Lake Champlain, there have been, recently, weeds in the lake later in the summer - and in the fall. Not great for water dodge ball, but fifteen feet out, no weeds at all due to closeness of cleansing deep channel. Bonfires at night on the beach, Sitting under the Chinese lanterns on the porch and watching the boats. This is a place for couples or families who like to read, be intimate, hike, walk, dine, tour history, bike, beach comb, fish. Golf and tennis, 14 miles in Middlebury.
Public access down the road about 1/4 mile for any size boat. You can rent kayaks, I have a small motor boat and nice flat bottom row boat.
  • Will pro-rate
Confusing, but, there is also a studio for one or two - up the hill, hidden behind a fence, total privacy, own canoe, private stairs to isolated beach- not seen from other house. Double bed, claw foot tub, kitchenette, gas fireplace, library, wireless. Usually keep this in case I come for a weekend, but under duress will rent to a person or two people who are happy with a studio instead of a house.

Does the job. Of course, the claw bathtub in the adorable smaller cottage, up on the hill, is right out in the open. You can sit in a bubble bath and look out at the water and trees, the breeze through the windows, it is magnificent. As I say, I do not rent the little cottage at the same time as the larger cottage, but I sometimes use it when I am here doing yard work or fixing a boat motor. You may just prefer a little unique love-nest to the larger house. 600 a week, because the kitchen is small. The tub makes up for it, as does the huge selection of books, Good place to write. Wireless. Perfect one or two person retreat. pix on request.

Sleeping is beyond words here, with the silence, or crickets and birds, and the intermittent moan of a train which makes its way up the other side of the lake to Montreal in the night, and morning. Great thing is, you get in the car and drive any which way and you come to these amazing little Vermont villages off the beaten track, the whole state is like a fantasy-land of beauty and quiet. Notes:

Country laundromat ten miles away and you can drop it off. Thinking of getting washer-dryer and I will if it seems to matter to people. But this is country living so why not beat your clothes on the beach rocks? It's better than a gym work-out. Speaking of a work-out. There are huge beautiful slate rocks you can carry up the bank, and getting in the water with a rake and raking the weeds onto the shore to dry will really work up your appetite. You can also walk for a mile up or down the beach, very very interesting beach, tree formations around the slate, little hide-a-way places. OR, you can go into the woods and collect firewood! Just wear trousers. OR, you can follow the creek up into the back woods which will take you to a cow pasture with cows in it. They will not bite you. I like to row the boat into the middle of the lake late at night and float and watch the shooting stars, just breath in the clean air, hear the waves lapping against the boat, sipping a beer. The simple life!!

Further Details for the house in Lake Champlain Valley, Vermont, USA

Revive both mind and body I love dogs and they have priority here! I am a writer and this place is fun, unique, interesting. (I am also a certified yoga instructor and had a yoga retreat here last year - if you want to have some classes!) Lots of books. Good reading lights. Good spices and oils for cooking. Good soap, good towels, good sheets. Very cozy, not at all like a hotel room or regular rental. Stack of information about things to do. And, as a native Vermonter, I can give you plenty of tips on where to go that others may not know about. At my place, you are surrounded with beautiful things, not junk or sterility, but I am really laid back so Pets and Kids are welcome with open arms. This place loves to be full of life as it should be, and also has a special feeling to it. Maybe it's the lake so close to the cottage, the lapping of the waves. Or the complete privacy, as the property is tucked away in a lovely, shaded and very private glen. If you have something to forget, you can forget it here.

Silent night Most places, you hear distant traffic, or some kind of man-made noise, a dull vibrating hum, so that although you feel like you are really in the country, you aren't. This is the country. You hear the wind, the crickets, the birds, the squirrels, a fish jumping, and the achingly beautiful train whistle moaning across the lake. It's amazing to sit on the deck and watch the geese and the sunset and hear yourself breathing. Martini on the deck, reading Thomas Merton or Henry Miller, the lovely viewing of sailboats drifting by and bird watching is spectacular. quiet fishing at an good inlet across the lake. Nice big open kitchen to cook in, as you look out a big bay window to the lake. The lake hasn't many cottages on it, you look North and see only trees for a couple of miles, so you don't feel like you're in a cottage amongst other cottage dwellers, you know what I mean? You are alone. You can go nude. You can drink all day. You can swear and curse at CNN. You can sob loudly.

no people The ten miles to the north of the property is Vermont Trust protected property, no people. There are two neighbors within walking distance if you need to borrow a cup of sugar, but you would never know they're there, behind all the trees. Apple and berry picking in the late summer and fall. I know where the private swimming holes are up in the mountains if it gets really hot in the summer. Spring weather is moody, which makes reading by the fire with a cup of cocoa or brandy a special treat. This is a place where the weather doesn't matter. I walk down the beach on the ice in the winter. Throw my skis on the car and head to the Middlebury College Snow Bowl for an afternoon of great skiing without a lot of tourists, stop in Middlebury en route home for a quick Toddie at Two Brothers Tavern. Back to the cottage and silence. A glass of wine by the fire. A good book. A baked chicken in the crock pot, you know, overcooked home-style? Lay back on the couch and eat while you're reading.

Skiing Information: 25 miles to a great ski area that is not crowded like the biggies. Middlebury College Snow Bowl. Great trails and good rates, especially mid-week.

Other Activities great bass fishing, glorious hikes, talk to each other
