About Daytona Beach Daytona Beach developed at the turn of the 20th century as a vacation retreat for the country's ultra-wealthy, including the Vanderbilts, Flaglers, Astors, and John D. Rockefeller, whose home 'Casements' now serves as the Daytona Beach Community Enrichment Center. Early automotive pioneers drove their motor cars up and down the hard-packed sand beach, earning it the nickname, 'The Birthplace of Speed.' (More about Daytona Beach history.) Driving is still permitted on parts of Daytona Beach, but cars are prohibited at the northern end of the beach.

Things To Do Daytona Beach is located on either side of the Halifax River, which is part of the Intracoastal Waterway (a series of federally maintained navigation channels extending from Norfolk, VA to Miami, FL). There are wonderful walking trails along the river, and the neighborhood all around Starfish Cottage is great for walking and cycling. There are a number of great parks and recreational areas in the vicinity, including Tomoka State Park, which offers a variety of outdoor activities, including camping, fishing, and canoeing.
