Market gunners hunted ducks here; artists (including American Master Martin Johnson Heade) painted its salt marshes, haystacks, and gundalows. Early aviation pioneers flew from its sandy shore (the airport is still here), and, amazingly, in the 21st century, it is still quiet, charming, friendly and unspoiled.
