Prague: Beauty in the Heart of Europe!
Prague, in the Czech Republic, sits like a beacon in the heart of Europe. While other cities have been ravaged by wars throughout the centuries, Prague has remained relatively unscathed, and is wonderfully preserved. Its compact medieval center remains an evocative maze of cobbled lanes, ancient courtyards, dark passages and churches beyond number, all watched over by an 1100-year-old castle with liveried guards. The city hums with a growing pulse, as post-communism Prague is developing its social legs. Cafes, coffee houses, discos, restaurants, bars, night clubs, theatres, museums, art galleries, and historical sights are all a part of the Prague experience.
The sights of Prague simply can't be beat. The many architectural styles encompassed in such a small area will cause sensory overload as you gaze at the myriad of churches, museums, and other historical sights. One can't-miss is Prague Castle. Occupying 18 acres, the castle may be the largest ancient castle in the world. The most popular edifices include Gothic St Vitius Cathedral (1344), its rich decorations epitomized by the glittering Chapel of St Wenceslas; and the Royal Garden (1569), where homesick Hapsburgs surrounded their badminton courts with beautiful flowers and striking Italian Renaissance residences.
For eye-popping views of the city, make the trek to Petrin Hill. The hill is topped with a network of eight parks, making this the largest green space in all of Prague. It is a fabulous spot for a cool walk, and for looking out over the postcard-perfect views of the "city of 100 spires." The Petrin Tower was built for the 1891 Prague Exposition, and is a carbon copy of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. For a small fee, you can climb the 299 steps that lead to the lookout. On a clear day, you can see into the central Bohemian woodlands.
The centerpiece of Old Town is Old Town Square, a 4.2 acre area that has been the working heart of Prague since the 10th century. Today the square is a circus of cafes spilling out onto sidewalks, performance artists, outdoor concerts, horse-drawn beer wagons, political meetings, and other public events. Nearby, Old Town Hall was created from a series of row houses, including the childhood home of Franz Kafka. The Astronomical Clock still marvels those who witness this mechanical masterpiece.
If shopping is your idea of a good vacation, Prague will be happy to assist you. The areas around The Jewish Quarter and the Karlova Ulice (on the way to the Charles Bridge) are both great places for antiques and hand made garments. The area around Old Town Square is filled with shops ranging from trendy furniture stores to kitschy souvenir shops. Prague has long been known for the crystal, so there is an abundance of high end glass stores located all over the city.
For those interested in fine art and history, make a beeline for the National Museum. A series of buildings in and around Wenceslas Square, at present the National Museum shelters almost 14 million items from the areas of natural and political history, arts, music and librarianship. It is the oldest museum in Bohemia, and the largest museum in the Czech Republic. The Czech Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1971 with a permanent collection of modern works from Czech artists. Today, it houses the most extensive collection of Czech and worldwide modern artists in the Czech Republic.
A visit to Prague is like simultaneously existing on two different planes. You are at once taken back to when Gothic architecture was the watchword, and yet, you are never unaware of how modern the city is. It is possible to visit the old and the new in a single outing. Take a ride down the Vltava River at dusk, to see the lights of the city brighten the night sky. Pop into a café for a quick latte, or test out your dancing shoes at a local disco. Walk across one of the many bridges, some that have survived since the year 600 AD. Take in a play at the National Theatre, or hear Mozart at the National Opera House. Belly up to a bar at an expat Irish pub. Stroll the same streets as "Good King Wenceslas." Prague is a symphony of sights and sounds that will bring out the wonder in any vacationer.
