The Pacific Coast: Mexico's Jewel on the Ocean!

The Pacific Coast of Mexico is filled with opportunities for great escape. Palm lined beaches are backed by tropical jungle terrain. Friendly merchants entice visitors to haggle with them over the price of hand-made crafts. And that Pacific sunshine! A day's itinerary can include scuba diving, parasailing, wind surfing, horseback riding, hiking, or just spending a quiet day at the beach!

Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico's top tourist destinations, sits nestled at the midpoint of Bahia de Banderas (Banderas Bay). Even though the town is very popular, it seems to retain a small town, less traveled quality. The surrounding region is rich in natural beauty, and eco-tourism is at full swing here.

Where there's the Pacific, there has to be beaches; and Puerto Vallarta has her share of them. The most popular is Playa de los Muertos (Beach of the Dead). This beach is great for sunning, and parasailing is one of the favorite pastimes. About 6 miles outside of town is Playa Mismaloya. This serene beach is where the film Night of the Iguana was filmed. The ruins of the movie set are available for inspection! The beach is backed by jungle sprawl giving it a feeling of total isolation, even though you are close to all modern amenities. A short distance away is the underwater park at Los Arcos. The park is teeming with dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life, and is a popular snorkeling spot. Playa del Oro, at the north end of town, is a favorite with local surfers. The rocky landscape surrounding the beach makes for impressive waves. Swimming should be attempted only by the strongest of swimmers.

Shopping is all the rage in Puerto Vallarta. At the Mercado Rio Cuale (Municipal Market) bargain hunters can find everything from pinatas to festive ceramics. Jewelry, especially silver, is very popular. Other notables are handmade huaraches (sandals) and ten-gallon sombreros.

Another special destination along the Pacific coast is Acapulco. Long known for its deep blue waters and snowy white beaches, Acapulco is the perfect place to go if your number one criterion is to do nothing at all. The best place to accomplish this feat is at one of the many beaches in the Acapulco area. At the westernmost tip of Acapulco Bay lies the twin beaches of Playa Caleta and Playa Caletilla. These two beaches are frequented by the locals and are great for an afternoon dip. A narrow causeway separates the two beaches and leads to Magico Mundo Marino, a water park with slides, a wave pool, and other swimming areas. In the center of the bay, Playa Condesa is a hangout for the surfing crowd. Big waves and devilish currents make swimming tricky, but surfers flock here in droves. Also near the western part of the bay is Playa la Angosta. This small, often deserted cove is a great place for some tranquil serenity in the sun. It is also close to La Quebrada, the little cove made famous by Acapulco's cliff divers. They give daily shows and jump into the surf from heights up to 35 meters!

While in Acapulco, visit the zocalo, Plaza Alvarez, a main gathering place in the middle of town. Pay attention to the bulbous shaped cathedral reminiscent of a Roman Orthodox church. The plaza is a great spot for people watching. Stop in one of the many cafes, sip a latte, and listen to the mariachi bands as you let the cool breeze provided by the Banyan trees waft across your face. Head up the hill to El Mirador (lookout point) for a spectacular view of the surrounding area. Or journey to Fuerte San Diego, a massive 18th century fort designed to protect Acapulco from invaders.

Huatulco, located east of Acapulco on the Oaxaca coast, sports the rather large boast of having the most beautiful beaches on the Pacific coast of Mexico. One trip to this pristine area and you may have to agree. The area encompasses the town of La Crucecita, and is a perfect mixture of modern amenities surrounded by virgin natural wonders. For most visitors, the Huatulco Bays, with their white sand and blue lagoons stay as the most vivid memory. The virgin beaches sheltered by dense forests dot the 9 bays and give visitors a perfect opportunity to relax and soak up the Pacific sunshine.

For an interesting excursion, visit the capital city of Oaxaca. This charming city gained its reputation for its interesting architecture, the richness of its cultural traditions, a renowned cuisine, and a spring-like climate throughout the year.

Oaxaca is often nicknamed "City of the Green Temples", by reference to its many religious buildings made from a green volcanic stone called "Cantera". Oaxaca temples are the most lavish of Southern Mexico. One example is the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was founded in 1644 by the Bethlemite order. In 1650 it was dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The Pacific Coast of Mexico offers visitors endless choices regarding how they spend their vacation. You want fun in the sun? No problem. You want nightlife, parties, and festivals? No problem. You want to visit eclectic shopping markets and haggle with friendly merchants? Got ya covered. A vacation to this part of Mexico can be as active or as lazy as you want it to be. However you choose to spend your vacation, the Pacific Coast of Mexico is the place to be!
