Krakow: The Heart and Soul of Poland!

Krakow, Poland had the fortunate luck of being basically untouched by Adolf Hitler during WWII. Other Polish cities suffered destruction that left them in ruins. Krakow was spared such a fate, and today the beauty of old world Poland comes alive on Krakow's streets. The city was named a World Heritage site in 1978 for all the historically important buildings and architecturally diverse attractions. The former capital of Poland, Krakow beats to the rhythm of a different drummer, reveling in its heritage as it rushes headlong into the future. Vacationers can fill their day embracing the sights of the old city, shopping in the unique boutiques, sampling the wonderful cuisine, and generally enjoying the atmosphere as another Krakow day passes by.

The city's center, and its main geographic attraction, is the historic Old Town district. This is the area where most of the historical buildings, museums, art galleries and churches are located. One of the oldest churches in Poland is the St. Adalbert's Church, which dates back to the 10th century AD. The Main Market Square serves as a central location for further exploration. It is a great spot for sitting in a café and watching the people going about their daily activities.

As the former capital of Poland, Krakow has a long and storied artistic heritage. One of the best museums in all of Europe is the National Museum, which houses the Czartoryski Collection, an impressive assortment of European art, Asian handicrafts, and armor from all over the globe. Some of the more famous pieces include Raphael's Portrait of a Young Man, Rembrandt's Landscape with the Good Samaritan, and Leonardo da Vinci's Cecilia Gallerani, also known as the Lady with an Ermine. Another interesting collection can be found at the Dom Jana Matejki Museum, home of the 19th century painter Jan Matejki. The artist spent his entire life in this house, and the main portion of the collection is dedicated to his work. There is also an extensive array of everything from Renaissance art to medieval weaponry. The 16th century building is a visual attraction due to its excellent condition.

Krakow is also a great place to find that special curio that you can't find back home. The Old Town section is filled with the same brand name stores you might find on the streets of Paris. Hand made crafts are available in open-air markets, which also sell a wide variety of produce items and local delicacies. Antiques and crystal are also two of Krakow's specialties. Busy Florianska Street is known as the "high street" of Krakow fashion. Local glass, wood carvings, and embroidered felt slippers are made in the Podhale region.

One of the most popular tourist sites in Poland can be found less than 30 miles east of Krakow in Auschwitz. This is not the usual attraction one finds in a vacation destination, but may be one of the most somber and memorable ones on your visit to Poland. It was here during WWII that four million people, 2.5 million of them Jews, were killed in this Nazi concentration camp. The "death camp" remains as it was when it was abandoned by the Nazis as they fled Poland. The crematorium, gas chambers, barracks, and barbed wire are a chilling reminder about the horrors of the Holocaust.

A vacation to Krakow is a feast for the eyes. The wonderful architecture represented in the buildings and churches will leave memories that last a lifetime. History buffs and art aficionados alike will have plenty to keep them busy. People watching is at a premium, and your taste buds will thank you too! So, get out your camera, saddle up, and hop on the Krakow train. This is one ride you don't want to miss!
