Jacksonville: From Port City to Pure Beauty!

Jacksonville, Florida has a past steeped in Spanish conquistadores, French settlers, and Civil War generals. Jacksonville was "discovered" by Ponce de Leon, and settled by Jean Ribault who claimed possession in the name of the king of France by implanting a stone monument visible to subsequent ships. Jacksonville is named for Colonel Andrew Jackson, Civil War leader and seventh president of the United States. The deep water surrounding Jacksonville helped develop the area into a vital port of entry. The city quietly evolved into a major business center of the South.

Jacksonville, the largest city in America (by land area), is flanked on both sides by the forks of the St. Johns River. The riverfront proves to be the heart of Jacksonville, providing waterfront views in every direction, restaurants and shopping befitting the choosiest consumer, and plenty of nightlife for adults. Both forks of the river are accessible by car, or for a traveling twist, take a water taxi to either side.

For outdoorsy types visiting Jacksonville, surfing, sailing, fishing, parasailing, and all other water sports are in abundance. With fifty courses in the area, like the TPC at Sawgrass, golfers of any skill level can have their par busting dreams put to the test. And Ponte Vedra Beach has tennis facilities that rival any of those offered by the United States Tennis Association.

Jacksonville proudly boasts three of Florida's greatest beaches. Atlantic Beach is Northeast Florida's favored surfing spot, while providing catamaran rentals and instruction for guests seeking a more romantic and restful experience by cruising along Jacksonville's beautiful coastline. Another prime surfing location and very popular beach, Neptune Beach, provides a quieter and relaxing family atmosphere. Jacksonville Beach's vivacious setting attracts many age groups; however, young people seem to flock to the area's beach activities and night life.

Southeast of Jacksonville is St. Augustine, the oldest city in America. Ponce de Leon's fabled Fountain of Youth, the source of everlasting life, is found in town, while the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument stands as it did in the late 1600's. Stroll down the streets in "Old Town" St. Augustine and see the myriad of shops and exhibitions that highlight a long forgotten past.

To Jacksonville's northeast is Amelia Island, renowned for its vacation resorts, golf courses, and Fernandina Beach. Or head inland to Walt Disney World, Epcot, Sea World, Universal, and all of Orlando's theme parks.

Whether you are searching for a tranquil stay on the beach, a trip around the links, or downtown city lights, Jacksonville has the cure for what ails you!
