North Baja: Fun & Sun on the Pacific Coast!

North Baja, Mexico is an interesting blend of geographical nuance.  Rustic, mountainous terrain gives way to gorgeous sand and palm lined beaches. Baja Norte begins as you cross the border from California, USA, and extends some 350-miles south towards Baja Sur. Isolated from the rest of Mexico by the Gulf of California, a trip to Baja is like visiting a final frontier. A vacation in this area can consist of beach activities like wind surfing, parasailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, or just basking in the Pacific sun.  Inland there are excellent places for camping, hiking, and taking in some of the area's natural bounty.

The largest town in North Baja is Ensenada.  The town spreads from the scrub-covered hills down the slope to lovely Bahia de Todos Santos.  With a terrific year-round climate and a laid back attitude, Ensenada is a great spot for spending a Baja vacation. Beaches are a favorite destination, and there are some great ones nearby.  Surfers flock to Playa San Miguel for its rocky coastline and intense breakers.  Playa Estero is a great stretch of beach if you are a fan of water sport activities. Water skis, jet skis, parasails, and paddle boats can be rented from the Estero Resort.  Playa Santa Maria has horses for rent and guided tours along the bay.

Go where few tourists venture as you hike the many trails along the mountains of the Punta Banda peninsula, near La Bufadora.  Magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and the Pacific await those willing to make the journey.  La Bufadora is also the name of the largest geyser on the Pacific coast.  On a good day, the "blow hole" shoots water 40 feet in the air out of a water-carved cave.

For some further fun in the sun, head south to the very festive community of Rosarito Beach.  Once known as a playground for only the very rich and famous, Rosarito today has grown into a vibrant, eclectic vacation Mecca for sun-worshipers of all shapes and sizes.  The allure can be seen easily at Rosarito Beach proper.  The beach extends for miles and boasts pristine white sand and a gentle slope into the calm Pacific.

James Cameron, famous Hollywood director, chose Rosarito for the setting of his movie, Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time. Today, Fox Studios Baja shows a film of the making of the movie, as well as some of the props from the film that are on display.

For an interesting day trip, head to the northern border town of Tijuana.  This famous (some would say infamous) desert community is a menagerie of great food, duty-free shopping, nefarious characters, and great vaudevillian type shows.

North Baja, Mexico is a great place for setting a Mexican vacation.  Head into the mountains and discover the less-traveled mountains.  Head to the coast and soak up some Pacific sunshine.  Vacations are for relaxing, and North Baja seems to have gotten the hint!
