Amsterdam: Holland's Jewel for the Imagination!

Amsterdam is a city of modern dreams. Today's Amsterdam has shed its image as a place for bohemian counter culture. You are more likely to see hot shot business people peddling bicycles through the narrow streets as you are of seeing the once omnipresent hippies hanging in coffee shops. Amsterdam still acknowledges its past (yes, cannabis and hashish are legal, but strictly controlled), but also prides itself on looking towards a modern, progressive future. A vacation in Amsterdam can be as active or as passive as you choose. Museums, galleries, boutiques, restaurants, theatres, and historical sites line the narrow streets. But with over 20 parks that include rivers, lakes, and vast expanses of greenway, you also have the option of getting physical as well.

With over 40 museums, Amsterdam is an art and history lover's dream. Some of the museums are world famous; others are small intimate affairs that exhibit smaller collections. One of the more well known is the Rijksmuseum which houses the world's largest collection of paintings by Dutch masters. Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, Maerten van Heemskerck, and Jacob van Ruysdael are just a few of the famous artists on display. The most famous painting in the museum is The Night Watch, Rembrandt's masterpiece painted in 1642.

The Anne Frankhuis Museum is housed in the very domicile where Anne Frank, a teenage Jewish girl, and other Jewish refugees, hid from Nazi soldiers in the years preceding WWII. She chronicled her life in hiding, the plight of the Jews, and her progress as a young woman in The Diary of Anne Frank, which has been published in 50 languages and has sold more than 13 million copies. The museum includes a year-by-year chronology of Anne's life. The sparseness of the rooms only adds to the solemn quality that permeates through the halls.

The Van Gogh Museum pays homage to the 19th century's most important Dutch artist, Vincent Van Gogh. The museum houses the world's largest collection of his paintings, and it gives a chronological and thematic presentation of his Dutch and French periods. The star of the show is Still Life Vase with Fourteen Sunflowers, best known simply as Sunflowers. There are also works by his contemporaries like Gauguin, Monet, Sisley, and others.

When the sun shines, Amsterdam residents get outside to see it. One of the most popular spots for enjoying outdoor Amsterdam is Vondelpark, a 122-acre park that is a haven for in-line skating, basketball, softball, Frisbee-flipping, and sun worshiping enthusiasts. The park is the place to be for catching an open-air concert, shopping in some of the craft stalls, or for taking a nice stroll along one of the lakes or ponds.

When you walk along Amsterdam's streets, you might think the whole city is selling something. Street vendors, unique boutiques, famous chain stores, and farmers' markets abound. A hint: go where the locals go. For instance, head to the flower market, Bloemenmarkt, that is on a row of barges permanently moored along the canals between Muntplein and Leidsestraat streets. Fresh flowers, plants, and assorted fruits and vegetables are offered by the friendly merchants.

To escape the madding crowds of the city, head south for the picturesque province of Limburg. This area borders Belgium in the west and south and Germany in the east. Limburg is known for its beautiful landscape with castles, green hills, picturesque villages, and great hiking and biking facilities.

An Amsterdam vacation can be filled with thrills of unending proportions. Take a cruise down one of the 150 canals. Visit one of the diamond cutting shops and watch them turn stones into magic. Sit in one of the many outdoor cafes and people watch as you drink an espresso. Try an Indonesian dinner of rijsttafel, a 20-item smorgasbord filled with pork kebabs, fried rice, seafood, and vegetables. The list of activities in Amsterdam is as long as your imagination, and Amsterdam is the place where an imagination can run wild!
