Munich: Germany's Hub of Art and Culture!

Munich, Germany is a divine masterpiece of cultural achievement. Housing more museums than any city in Germany, Munich prides itself on its artistic appreciation. The city also manages to emit a laid back feeling. A big activity is just strolling through the streets, stopping periodically to sample one of the over 300 Biergartens. Historical buildings and monuments line the streets, and the friendly citizens will happily tell you of their local history. Munich is also known for its world-class musical venues. Whether it's attending an opera or listening to a summer concert in the park, all manner of musical experience is available. A camera is a must during your visit to Munich. Pick a favorite sight and start clicking!

Art lovers will go wild for Munich's museums and galleries. One of the favorites is the Alte Pinakothek, one of the oldest and most important galleries in the world. More than 800 pieces by European artists take visitors on a journey extending from the Middle Ages through the Rococo Period. The museum houses one of the largest Rubens collections in the world. Other artists represented include the Venetian artist Titian, and works by Dutch baroque artist Frans Hals. The Deutsches Museum (German Museum of Masterpieces of Science and Technology) houses the world's largest collection of technical artifacts in the world. Included in the collection is the first automobile (Benz, 1886), the first electronic dynamo (Siemens, 1866), and the laboratory bench at which the atom was first split (Hahn, Strassmann, 1938). The kids will love all the buttons to push, knobs to pull, and gears to crank.

Music is as synonymous with Munich as Jack Nicklaus is with professional golf. Whether you are into jazz, folk, opera, or the locally flavored oompah bands, Munich has something to offer everyone with a musical bent. The Bavarian State Orchestra is based out of the National Theatre, a performing arts complex that also houses a theatrical company. The Orchestra is regarded as one of the best in all of Europe. Founded in 1893, the Munich Philharmonic is housed in the Gasteig Cultural Center. Some of the most famous artists in the classical music world have performed with the Philharmonic, including Andreas Segovia, Yitzhak Perlman, and Placido Domingo.

There are few cities in the world with the architectural diversity of Munich. Around every corner there seems to be a church or public building with a different esthetic. The New Town Hall was built between 1867 - 1909 in the Flanders Gothic style; its facade, over 300 feet in length, features strikingly elaborate stone ornamentation. Its 260-foot tower is one of the most distinctive features of the city's skyline. The Ludwigstrabe is one of Munich's showpieces. The building extends from the Triumphal Arch to the Commanders' Hall, and was built under King Ludwig I in the first half of the 19th century. It marked the transformation of Munich from a medieval town to an imperial residence.

Munich is a cultural mecca and a vivacious, fun-loving city whose biggest yearly festival, Oktoberfest, revolves around beer. Take the little ones to the Hellabrunn Zoo, and see the over 5000 animals that make their home here. Take the Bavaria Film Tour, and find out how movies like Neverending Story and Das Boot were made. Take a stroll, or hop in a boat and paddle on the pond in Englischer Garten, a seemingly endless park that borders Munich's north side. Head to Viktualienmarkt, one of Munich's biggest open-air markets, and sample some of the local cuisine. Munich is a wonderland of sights and sounds just waiting to be explored!
