If you love the beautiful island scenery and breathtaking beaches that lines the shores of Maui but would rather avoid the crowds and bustling atmosphere of popular areas like Kihei and Lahaina, charter your own course to island bliss by simply heading north.
Although many of the towns along Maui’s North Shore may be quiet, charming places where you can get off the beaten path, Paia combines a slow-paces lifestyle with alluring attractions to create an always welcoming package. Whether you are popping in and out of its quaint boutiques and specialty shops, getting advice at the surf shops, or perusing the numerous art galleries, there is no doubt that this former sugar town has transformed itself into the destination for R and R.
But while Paia is certainly enticing with its exotic merchandise and surprisingly selection of fine dining, one of the main reasons you come to Maui is for the stunning beaches. And in this regard, Paia never disappoints. Right outside of town rests the stunning white sands of Baldwin Beach, which is rarely crowded and offers excellent swimming conditions for the entire family.
However, a short drive along the scenic Hana Highway will plant at the area’s main attraction: Hookipa Beach Park. As the windsurfing capital of the world, this is definitely not a place to take the little ones for a frolic in the sand, but it is a stunning spot to watch experienced watermen surf, jump and flip their way over the Pacific’s challenging waves.
If you are looking for something in between these two beaches, where you can do more than swim without the worry of Hookipa’s big waves and winds, there is one more option right around the corner from Paia vacation rentals. On the edge of town, Paia Bay, also referred to as Baby Beach, is a good, uncrowded swimming beach that also boasts excellent boogie boarding and body boarding when the waves kick up so you can satisfy your need for water-filled adventures.
