Melbourne Beach: Where Sunshine meets the Space Shuttle
Melbourne Beach, Florida is located on the same barrier island that claims Cocoa Beach as a resident. Developed in 1883 by retired Major Cyrus E. Graves, Melbourne Beach has a history of pineapple plantations, military training during WWII, real estate booms, real estate busts, and finally, today as a thriving vacation spot on the "Space Coast."
One of the best beach areas in Melbourne Beach is in Spesser Holland Park. Located three miles south of the Melbourne Causeway, the park sprawls for a mile along A1A and features north and south entrances. With gentle sloping shores that dip politely into the sea, the area is perfect for an afternoon swim. Rent a wave runner, jet ski, or hire a captain for an afternoon of parasailing.
Another good sun gathering spot is Patrick Air Force Base, north of Satellite Beach, which provides beach access at several points along A1A. The beaches are clean, wide, and safe, and the north end of the base is known as a great surfing area. In Satellite Beach, Pelican Beach Park is one of the best reasons to come to the town. The park has two sand dunes that act as crossovers to the beach, and an observation tower that gives a great view of the surrounding area.
Nature lovers will appreciate the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, which provides a protected habitat for sea turtles and other endangered species. This 20-mile stretch of coastline is the most important nesting site for loggerhead turtles in the Western Hemisphere. A few access points to the refuge are indicated by signs, and several turtle-watching programs operate during nesting season.
The nearby town of Indialantic offers 1-1/2 miles of beach whose understated appeal centers around several excellent beachfront parks. The first is Canova Beach, located at the northern end of the town. You can water ski, parasail, swim, sunbathe, or body surf the day away! To the south, James Nance Park is conveniently located in the heart of town. In addition to the wonderful beach activities available, the park has the added appeal of being close to numerous restaurants and local watering holes.
If lounging in the sun in Melbourne Beach gets too monotonous, head north to Cocoa Beach, and lounge in the sun there for a while! Or pop over to the John F. Kennedy Space Center for a tour of NASA and see how we launch astronauts, satellites, and shuttles into outer space. Of course, if you head west an hour and a half, you will land in Orlando, and all the themed attractions such as Disney World, Epcot, Universal, and Sea World.
If relaxing in the sun is your idea of a vacation, then visit Melbourne Beach. Sunshine and the sound of waves crashing against the shore will be just the ticket!
