Killington: Not Just for Winter Anymore!

Killington, Vermont has long been the playground for alpine enthusiasts. Spanning seven mountains, Killington has the kind of snow that average mortals only dream about. Recently, however, Killington is coming into its own as a year-round vacation destination. The same trails that serve skiers and snowboarders give way to hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts. Golf balls fly around on Killington's highly acclaimed course. Streams teem with brook and brown trout. A quick drive away from Killington are some of the most scenic little villages in all of Vermont.

Before heading out on the slopes, history buffs will want to pay a visit to the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, located in nearby Plymouth Notch. This is the home where the 30th president was born and spent many of his summers. The setting is complete with well-preserved clapboard buildings that are set against an idyllic setting of mountains and large trees. Some of the buildings include a one-room schoolhouse, a country store owned by Coolidge's father, the 1924 Summer White House with all its furnishings, and the home where, upon President Harding's sudden death, Coolidge took the oath of office at 2:47 am.

Killington Ski Resort is the undisputed champ of all eastern ski resorts. This is the place to be if you like skiing on a LARGE scale. 30 chairlifts and 2 gondolas take visitors to over 1100 acres of skiable terrain. Killington has over 60 miles of trails spread out over more than 200 runs that are serviced by 19 ski lifts. Killington has the most extensive snowmaking system on the planet (thanks to a connection to the Woodward Reservoir), and over 250 inches of annual snowfall that keep skiers and snowboarders moving well into May. Perfect Turn, the skiing and snowboarding instructional program, has a roster of over 100 instructors, making Killington one of the most comprehensive ski schools in the country!

When the snows give way to Spring's thaw, Killington becomes the place for mountain biking enthusiasts. Whether you're a cross-country climber, a downhill free styler, or a casual cruiser or first timer, Killington has over 40 miles of trails that can serve your needs. The trails range from easy, coast-as-you-go rides, to bumpy, rock laden adrenaline runs that will have your heart jumping out of your throat. The views atop Killington Peak should not be missed. From here you can see across 5 states and into Canada! Absolute beginners can get set up by the folks at the Killington Mountain Bike Shop.

More outdoor fun can be found close to Killington in the Coolidge State Forest. Spanning over 17,000 acres, the forest was the stomping ground of Calvin Coolidge. Hiking enthusiasts will find ample trails, ranging in difficulty from simple day hikes to a portion of the Appalachian Trail. The Black River and Broad Brook serve as fishing holes for those who are looking for brown or brook trout. There is an intricate series of trails that serve hikers and mountain bikers in the summer, and snowmobilers in the winter.

Killington is full of activities that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Golfers will want to tee it up on Killington's Resort Course, which received a high rating from Golf Digest magazine. The local colors come out in the fall, making Killington the ideal spot for viewing autumn leaves. Boating fans will find plenty of tranquil lakes. Kids of all ages will enjoy a trip through the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory in nearby Waterbury.
