Dunmore Town: A True Bahamian Getaway
Dunmore Town, located on Harbour Island, is an ideal setting for a Bahamas vacation. The oldest settlement in all of the Bahamian Islands, Dunmore Town is picturesque with pastel-colored clapboard houses, white picket fences, narrow streets, quaint shops, and tropical flowers. Harbour Island is just off of Eleuthera, but it feels like you are worlds away from anywhere as you enjoy the quiet beauty of this island. A day's itinerary can include snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, parasailing, sailing, or lounging on one of the many beaches.
The crystal clear water around the Bahama Islands have earned them the reputation as one of the top scuba diving sites in the world. Reef dives, wall dives, shipwrecks, and cave dives are available for all skill levels. The water is so clear that, even at depth, it appears shallow. One of the most famous dives off of Eleuthera is the Train Wreck. Resting in 15 to 30 feet of water are the remains of railroad cars that slid off a barge in 1865 during a storm. The cars were used by the Confederacy during the Civil War. Another popular dive on Eleuthera is the Current Cut; the "cut" is a channel between two reef walls about 75 yards apart. Divers are dropped off at one end of the cut and picked up at the other end. The direction depends on the current, which pulls divers through the channel in about 12 minutes.
Probably the most famous spot on Harbour Island is Pink Sand Beach, located just outside of Dunmore Town. The 3 mile beach extends the length of the island facing the Atlantic Ocean. The views are spectacular; visitors and locals enjoy watching sunsets from the beach. Pink Sand Beach is also a great spot to don your snorkeling gear and visit the local sea life. The beaches on neighboring Eleuthera can range form crowded to remote, depending on the visitor's mood. For some active beach time, head to Surfers Beach. The area is renowned for its winter waves that rival those of Hawaii. Some more great snorkeling can be found at Seaside Beach, located in Rainbow Bay near Governor's Harbour. Governor's Beach was once the site of a Club Med on Eleuthera. Although the resort is long gone, the beach has become known as a place for total relaxation.
A vacation in Dunmore Town is the perfect chance to get away and recharge your engine. Go fly fishing for bonefish, or rent a charter to try some deep-sea fishing for blue marlin. Set your compass for one of the straw markets on the island. Today's Bahamians continue the tradition of the early Lucayan and Taino Indians by producing distinctive arts and crafts that reflect the skill and artistry of their heritage. Bargains on duty-free items can be found on nearby Spanish Wells. Try kayaking in the inland ponds and lagoons. Comb the beaches for that special driftwood or sea shell souvenir. If you are looking for a relaxing Bahamian vacation spot, Dunmore Town more than fits the bill.
