Palmetto Point: A Perfect Bahamian Vacation

Palmetto Point, located on the Island of Eleuthera, is an ideal spot for a Bahamas vacation. The settlement, which also includes North Palmetto Point, is the place to go if you value your privacy, and want to enjoy the Bahamian Islands far from the madding crowds. Sampling the excellent local cuisine and unwinding with a cool beverage as you gaze out into the ocean are valued pastimes. If you want some active fun in the sun, a day's itinerary can include snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, parasailing, sailing, or lounging on one of the many beaches.

If a day at the beach is your idea of a perfect vacation activity, Palmetto Point has enough sand to keep you busy for a month of Sundays. The beaches have no names in this remote area, just miles of sand and great views of the ocean. About 10 minutes away by car, Governor's Harbor has more beach opportunities. The two beaches known as Buccaneer Public Beaches, located near the center of town, are great snorkeling beaches. The beaches face Exuma Sound, and have relatively calm waves that are perfect for younger visitors. Governor's Beach, located just outside of town facing the Atlantic, was once the site of beach activity back when Club Med had a resort on Eleuthera. Today, the resort is long gone, and the beach has become known as a place for total relaxation. Probably the most famous beach is Pink Sand Beach, located on Harbour Island and close to the serene village of Dunmore Town.

The crystal clear water around the Bahama Islands have earned them the reputation as one of the top scuba diving sites in the world. Reef dives, wall dives, shipwrecks, and cave dives are available for all skill levels. The water is so clear that, even at depth, it appears shallow. One of the most famous dives off of Eleuthera is the Train Wreck. Resting in 15 to 30 feet of water are the remains of railroad cars that slid off a barge in 1865 during a storm. The cars were used by the Confederacy during the Civil War. Another popular dive on Eleuthera is the Current Cut; the "cut" is a channel between two reef walls about 75 yards apart. Divers are dropped off at one end of the cut and picked up at the other end. The direction depends on the current, which pulls divers through the channel in about 12 minutes.

Anglers will appreciate the diversity of fishing opportunities on Eleuthera. Bonefishing is popular; prime fishing sites can be reached by small boat or by wading out into the flats. Fly fishing enthusiasts love the hearty fight put up by these fish, some weighing up to fifteen pounds. You can also head out into the depths and go deep-sea fishing looking for marlin, sailfish, tuna, mahi-mahi or mackerel. Over 50 world record fish have been caught in the Bahamas during big-game tournaments.

Palmetto Point can serve as a jumping off point to other Eleuthera attractions. Immerse yourself in local culture as you plan your visit around Junkanoo, a Mardi Gras-like festival with a specific Bahamian feel. The parade takes place around New Years; costumes, dance, and music are organized around a particular theme. As far as a carnival atmosphere goes, Junkanoo can't be beat! Bargain and trinket hunters should look for one of the island's Straw Markets. Hone your haggling skills as you barter with local merchants for everything from handmade hats and baskets to home made guava jellies. Strap on your dancing shoes as you head for the local Goombay music. Head out to Spanish Wells for great seafood and further shopping opportunities. If you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy the Bahamian sun, Palmetto Point is just the place.
