Rosarito Beach: Too Much Fun in North Baja!

Rosarito Beach, Mexico is the place to be if you are looking for some fun in the sun south of the border. Located on the California peninsula in an area known as North Baja, Rosarito has been the stomping ground for Pai Pai and Cochimi Indians, Spanish explorers, and Hollywood royalty who came here in quieter times to hunt and fish for deer, quail, and abalone. Today, however, tourism is the cash crop, as visitors from around the globe come to Rosarito for the laid back atmosphere, the thriving nightlife, and to soak up some Pacific sun. A vacation in this area can consist of beach activities like wind surfing, parasailing, scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, or just tanning on a gorgeous beach.

Before heading outdoors, you should pay a visit to Fox Studios Baja, home of the movie production company that has a film studio in Rosarito. In 1995, Fox Studios put Rosarito permanently on the film making map when James Cameron brought his production of Titanic to the area. To accommodate his elaborate vision, Cameron built the largest water front movie set in the world. The main tank holds an astounding 16 million gallons of water, and has a total area of over 360,000 feet! In addition to Titanic, recent productions of Planet of the Apes and Master and Commander have also filmed here. The studio also has a theme park, Foxploration, designed to give visitors an up close and personal view of life on a movie set. You can visit the Titanic exhibit and see some of the props and sets used for the shoot. You can also visit the Canal Street exhibit, a replica of a New York city street scene.

Beach lovers will want to seek out all the fun that can be found on Rosarito Beach, the largest beach in town. The beach extends for miles and boasts pristine white sand and a gentle slope into the calm Pacific. More beach fun can be found as you make your way south towards the town of Ensenada. Surfers flock to Playa San Miguel for its rocky coastline and intense breakers. Playa Estero is a great stretch of beach if you are a fan of water sport activities. Water skis, jet skis, parasails, and paddle boats can be rented from the Estero Resort. Playa Santa Maria has horses for rent and guided tours along the bay.

For an interesting day trip, head to the northern border town of Tijuana. This famous (some would say infamous) city is a menagerie of great food, duty-free shopping, and great vaudevillian type shows. A word of caution: Tijuana is fun, but visitors should never travel alone.

Rosarito Beach has something for every vacationer's taste. Golfers can tee it up at Bajamar, a 27-hole course with great ocean views. Sports fishing enthusiasts can charter boats to take them in search of marlin and tuna. Hiking and mountain biking fans can take scenic trips that will lead them to San Pedro National Park, where they can see the waterfalls, fish for rainbow trout, and relax in a mountain swimming hole. History and archeology hounds will want to take a burro ride to check out the Mural Cave Paintings of the Sierra de San Francisco. The 10,000 year old paintings are some of the most significant cave paintings in the world. If you are looking for a place to enjoy the Baja sun, Rosarito Beach is just the place!
