Who knows how or why fabulous vacation destinations tend to spring up in the middle of the desert, but Phoenix is one of those places that just may surprise you. With a strong cast of surrounding cities and ever-growing and improving center, there’s never a dull moment in this sprawling region.
Arizona has its share of hot days, but if you’re looking to flee a harsh winter this will be the perfect place to play it cool. First thing’s first; settle into a condo or house that will situate you within easy reach of Phoenix’s highlights – whatever those may be in your eyes. Check out the list known as Phoenix Points of Pride for a few good ideas. Before this trip is through, you and your family will be likely to have seen historic Tovrea Castle, Encanto Park and Wrigley Mansion.
Nature’s complements will intrigue you as well. Camelback Mountain, Desert Botanical Garden and Papago Park will show off geological formations as well as lakes, trails, history and ideal picnic spots. You’ll probably learn a few things, burn a few calories and find yourself in possession of a few fine memories that will make it all truly worthwhile.
Follow the interstate to Tempe, Scottsdale or Mesa to see what else is out there (just be careful not to speed – the penalties here are pretty harsh). Or, stay close to your home away from home and get playful in the pool, sleep in, watch movies with your favorite people and simply exist as a free bird for a few days. Phoenix isn’t the kind of place that will hem you in, so prepare to see how far and how high you can go.
