Jekyll Island: A Gem off the Georgia Coast!

Jekyll Island, Georgia located 6 miles off the Georgia coast, has for decades been considered one of the premier resort areas in the United States. Dating back to the late 1800s when the Jekyll Island Club hosted such prominent families as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and the Morgans, people have visited Jekyll Island in search of sun, fun, and the Atlantic surf. Today, Jekyll Island is a National Park, and maintains its reputation by offering modern amenities in an environmentally protected setting. A vacation on Jekyll Island can include golf, tennis, fishing, swimming, scuba diving, or just relaxing on an excellent beach with a good book.

Ten miles of pristine beaches lure visitors in search of that perfect suntan. Brilliant sand dunes, fortified by wispy sea oats, provide a cover of seclusion, giving one the sense of being alone on this gorgeous island. Some of the popular spots are Driftwood Beach, Glory Beach, and St. Andrews Beach. St. Andrews, in particular, is a great shelling spot and will provide an opportunity for collecting that perfect beach souvenir.

Anglers flock to Jekyll Island's rich fishing grounds. Thousands of acres of salt marsh flats, miles of rivers and creeks, warm ocean waters, and an abundance of shrimp and baitfish make these waters some of the most productive anywhere. Deep sea, offshore and inshore fishing are all available. Speckled sea trout, red bass, flounder, whiting, king and Spanish mackerel, shark and tarpon are a few of the species that visit local waters.

Though small in size, Jekyll Island has giant opportunities for golfers to play their game. Demanding and picturesque, the Oleander Course, designed by Dick Wilson, is frequently mentioned among Georgia's best loops. Pine Lakes, another Wilson course, is the longest and tightest of the Jekyll courses. Trees line the doglegged fairways of this course that rumbles through the interior of the island. Indian Mound, designed by Joe Lee, has wide, forgiving fairways, but turbulent rolling greens. Great Dunes is a true links course and takes advantage of the sea breezes that puff across the fairways. Some of the holes were a part of the original course that opened in 1898.

Kids of all ages will enjoy the steady stream of excitement they get at Summer Waves Water Park. Perfect for cooling off in the hot Georgia sun, Summer Waves has over a million gallons of water running through 11 acres of action packed rides. Grit your teeth and tackle the Pirates Passage, a totally enclosed flume that takes riders over bumpy terrain totally enclosed in total darkness. Or relax as you encircle the park in an inner tube while riding the Slow Motion Ocean. Arcades and restaurants complete the fun filled picture.

Nature lovers will enjoy the teeming wildlife environment that exists on Jekyll Island. Deer, wild turkey, hawks, raccoons, egrets, herons, and shore birds can be seen on one of the various nature walks available through the visitor's center. The island's most famous residents are the loggerhead sea turtles that come to lay their eggs from May through August on Jekyll Island's beaches. These majestic animals are protected by the state of Georgia as an endangered species.p>

Jekyll Island has something for everyone. Nature lovers and birding enthusiasts will go wild over the island's natural habitat. Golfers will appreciate the 63 holes on four different courses. Anglers will enjoy both salt water and open water fishing. Kids will twist and turn themselves silly at the island's water park. Beach lovers and sun bathers will flock to the seemingly endless miles of pristine beaches. However you choose to spend your Georgia vacation, Jekyll Island is the place to spend it!
