Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo: Sun and Fun on the Mexican Riviera!
Although the villages of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are close in geography, they are worlds apart in what they offer in a vacation destination. Ixtapa is a full-grown resort community complete with all the frenetic activity one would expect in a popular vacation haven. Zihuatanejo, by contrast, is becoming more popular, but still retains the feel of a quaint Mexican fishing village. Located in the state of Guerrero, both destinations are ideal spots for a Mexican vacation. A day's itinerary can include swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, horseback riding, sight-seeing, or plopping down a towel and grabbing some Pacific sunshine.
Both towns are located along the Pacific Riviera, an area known for fabulous beaches and a stunning nightlife. The beaches of Ixtapa illustrate the area perfectly, combining excellent sand with a hefty dose of people watching. Playa Palmar, Ixtapa's main beach, is a wonderful arc of white sand set against a backdrop of dramatic rock formations that slope into the sea. Playa las Cuatas is a great swimming beach, located in a pretty cove a few miles north of Ixtapa.
The beaches around Zihuatanejo are just as beautiful as Ixtapa, but are usually far less crowded. Playa Municipal, the town beach, is a great place to watch the local fishermen bring their colorful boats up on the sand. The shops around the beach are great for picking up a souvenir, and watching the villagers go about their day. The biggest beach in Zihuatanejo is Playa La Ropa, just south of town. Palm groves edge the sugar white sand. This is a great beach to catch a dazzling Pacific sunset. The best beach for children is Playa Las Gatas due to its gentle slope and the calm waves. A small coral reef just offshore is a favorite hangout for snorkelers and scuba divers.
If it is outdoor adventure you seek, then the Mexican Riviera is for you. Anglers will love deep-sea fishing excursions as they look for Pacific sailfish, blue and black marlin, yellowfin tuna, dorado, and wahoo. Scuba diving enthusiasts will be giddy over the prospect of diving more than 30 sites. Windsurfing, parasailing, kayaking, and canoeing aficionados can find equipment to help them head out in the Pacific. A great way to catch a sunset is on a horseback riding adventure. Hiking lovers can get away from it all as they trek the trails out on Isla Ixtapa.
Golfing enthusiasts should not leave their clubs at home on their trip to the Pacific Coast of Mexico. The Palma Real Golf and Tennis Club in Ixtapa is one of Mexico's finest. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the course wanders through jungle terrain and also follows a coconut plantation as it spills out onto Playa Palmar Beach. The course is part of a wildlife preserve, and is home to many species of birds and three lakes whose residents include alligators. The Marina Ixtapa Golf Club, designed by Robert Von Hagge, will challenge golfers of all skill levels. The loop utilizes extra large sand traps and over three kilometers of canals as deterrents for wayward shots. Water comes into play on 14 of the courses holes.
The villages of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo have everything one could ask for in a Pacific Coast vacation. Hop in a sailboat and snorkel around Isla Ixtapa. The shops in Zihuatanejo are great for anyone looking for a bargain. Shoppers can find everything including jewelry, ceramics, wooden masks, hammocks, woolen rugs, as well as textiles from various parts of the country and Guatemala. Hire a sea captain to take you on a sunset cruise. Visit the Costa Grande Archaeological Museum for a glimpse into the region's diverse history. Whether you want a frenetic nightlife, or a calm day in the sun, Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo can fill the bill!
