A Haiku Vacation Offers Anything You Can Imagine
Although Maui may be known for its overrun tourist spots and dazzling soft sand beaches, there is a way to balance your desire for scenery, water sports and a little bit of privacy in this popular island paradise. And how is that possible? It’s called the small town of Haiku.
Located on Maui’s north shore, Haiku is a land where the pineapple industry used to reign and little attention was given to its place as a possible vacation hot spot. But then, someone noticed its spectacular landscapes, which run from the lower slopes of Mount Haleakala to a spectacular seashore that is bursting with possibilities, and out jumped a destination that is certainly off the beaten path but also teeming with opportunities for adventure.
With so many places to start, it may be a bit overwhelming, and surprising, to find yourself surrounded by so much untamed excitement away from West Maui. However, you can get your bearings with a scenic drive on the Hana Highway, which winds its way past breathtaking waterfalls, beaches and bridges all the while offering unbeatable ocean views.
Although you don’t have to make the entire journey all the way to Hana, it is an excellent day trip that will lead you to the gates of Haleakala National Park. With its mix of volcanic landscapes and sub-tropical rainforest terrain, this is one area where you can truly rekindle your love for the great outdoors or discover that spark in someone who is just beginning to experience nature’s wonders.
Since these are a bit removed from your Haiku vacation rental, it might also be comforting to know that there is plenty to see and do from your peaceful home base. Just a few minutes away, Hookipa Beach Park (the windsurfing capital of the world) is a great place to catch a glimpse of jaw-dropping pros as they work their magic, while the shops, boutiques and restaurants of Paia offer a laid-back look at the evolution of the north shore.
