Acapulco: Fun for Everyone on Mexico's Pacific Coast!
Acapulco, Mexico, located in the state of Guerrero, has long been famous as a vacation play land for everyone from families to jet setters. With over 360 days a year of sunshine, more than 20 beaches, and enough activities to keep visitors busy for a month of Sundays, Acapulco shines brightly as a vacation destination on Mexico's Pacific Coast. When the sun dips into the Pacific, Acapulco comes alive with a nightlife that is famous for all the restaurants, clubs, and discos that can have you dancing until dawn. For those who love vacationing in the great outdoors, a day's itinerary in Acapulco can include deep-sea fishing, swimming, horseback riding, golf, hiking, parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, and snorkeling.
Before a good soak in the sunshine, you will want to visit the San Diego Fort to get a better understanding of Acapulco's rich history. The fort was originally built in 1616 to protect the town from pirate attacks. After extensive damage during an earthquake in 1776, the fort was rebuilt, and recently underwent a renovation in 2000. The structure houses the Museo Histórico de Acapulco (Acapulco Historical Museum), with exhibits that tell the story of Acapulco from its role as a port in the conquest of the Americas to a center for local Catholic conversion campaigns and for exotic trade with the Orient.
With over 20 different beaches to choose from in the Acapulco area, sun worshipers will find plenty of sand and surf to meet their needs. Caleta Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Acapulco Bay. The gentle waves make this a perfect spot for an afternoon swim. La Condesa is famous for surfing and people watching. This is a great beach for meeting others interested in water sports like jet skiing and parasailing. Pie de la Cuesta is another surfing beach, and is also a favorite for those who want to take a horseback ride while watching the fabulous Acapulco sunsets.
The Pacific Ocean provides endless opportunities for adventurous vacationers. Anglers will want to cast a line for sailfish, red snapper, sea bass, pompano or bonito. Snorkeling and hiking enthusiasts will want to catch a boat to Roqueta Island. Scuba divers will want to swim down to see the underwater sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron Saint of Mexico. The statue of the virgin was placed there in 1958 in memory of a group of divers that lost their lives at the site. Whether it is on a yacht, catamaran, or trimaran, Acapulco is the place to be for cruises in the Pacific.
Acapulco has something for every vacationer. If you are visiting during the winter months, be sure to check out the bullfights that take place just up the hill from Caletilla Beach. Kids of all ages will love the thrills to be found at Centro Internacional de Convivencia Infantil (CICI), a combination sea-life and water park located near the convention center. Thrill seekers will certainly want to catch the nightly show of the La Quebrada cliff divers as they plunge into the Bay from heights reaching 150 feet. Whether you love techno or tejano music, Acapulco has the dance club for anyone who wants to step out on a dance floor. Acapulco is a non-stop, 24-hour party, and you are invited!
