Le Marche: The Best Kept Secret in Italy!

The Le Marche (Marches) region of Italy is quietly tucked between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains. It is a patchwork of hillside medieval towns and pristine white sand beach resorts. This is the vacation for those who wish to explore the rich culture and cuisine of Italy, without having to fight through the crowds of more visited areas. A visit in the Marches can be spent shopping on cobblestone streets of your favorite village, or soaking up the sun along the Adriatic coast. People watching, wine sampling, and food tasting are a mandatory part of a visit to the Marches. So, grab a map and dive right in!

If beach fun is what you seek, you have your choice of atmosphere in the Marches. If you want the frenetic atmosphere that goes with a popular resort, head to more populated portions of the Marches where towns like Gabicce Mare, Pesaro, Senigallia, and San Benedetto del Tronto offer a lively atmosphere and plenty of nightlife. If getting away from it all is your idea of beach heaven, set your compass for the Conero Peninsula. This area is less traveled due to the extreme cliff structure that overlooks the Adriatic. But, rugged terrain aside, if you want a beach with sugar white sand and few visitors to share it with, the Conero Peninsula is for you.

If both art and scenery are in your travel plans, you can't make a better choice than Urbino. Medieval and Renaissance styles collide in this city rich in art and architecture. The most dominant feature of Urbino is the Palazzo Ducale, one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Italy. The palace's twin towers look out over the mountainous countryside, beacons of gold glinting in the sun. The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche is housed within the palace walls, and has an impressive collection of works by Renaissance artists, most notably the town's favorite son, Rafael. The town's center square, the Piazza del Popolo, buzzes with activity during the day, but really livens up at night, when the students from the town's college descend in droves looking for cappuccinos and conversations.

You really can't go wrong with any of the Marches hill towns. Another excellent example is Amandola, nestled under the awning of the Sibillini Mountains. Those willing to take the long climb to the perch where the town sits are rewarded with incredible views of the surrounding hillside and the valley below. The town's main square, Piazza del Risorgimento, is alive with activity as both tourists and residents occupy the many restaurants that line the square. If you are here in the first week of September, you can watch some of the many events staged during the annual International Theatre Festival.

Art lovers will have plenty of picture snapping opportunities during a Marches vacation. It seems every little town has at least one museum housing some important work. The Museo del Risorgimento in Macerata has a wonderful museum dedicated to the unification of Italy. In San Severino the Pinacoteca Civica houses some sparkling pictures by the Salimbeni brothers, the Marche's early Renaissance painters. The Museo Civico, in Pesaro, has two delights: a beautiful altarpiece by Bellini and a remarkable collection of painted Renaissance ceramics. For something completely different, head to the Museo della Carta in Fabriano. Fabriano is famous for its paper, and this specialized modern museum is particularly fascinating. You can even see demonstrations of hand-made papermaking.

For the adventurous vacationer, the Marches offer everything one could ask for in a cultural feast of activities. Medieval towns with cobblestone alleys converge with Renaissance architectural delights, creating a symphony of stunning sights. The Marches are thick with the remnants of bygone eras. A glass of wine at sunset in a piazza with friends is a universal pleasure sure to relax any weary traveler. This part of Italy is full of visually stunning buildings and hidden treasures that can only be discovered by accident. So, what kind of explorer are you?
