The Greek Isles: Paradise off the Coast of Greece!
Nestled politely in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, the Greek Islands are a veritable playground of fun, sun, nightlife, beaches, and outdoor activities. Depending on which island you choose, you can have a secluded hideaway or a bustling, no holds barred frenetic vacation. The waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean hold the key to all sorts of gusto filled fun. A day's itinerary can include swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, parasailing, or just lounging on one of the island's magnificent beaches.
Patmos, one of the islands in the Dodecanese Islands, may be the perfect blend of cuisine, history, shopping, and fun in the sun. Not as jam packed with visitors as Santorini, Patmos has an activity for every taste bud. Religious historians will appreciate Patmos' relationship with St. John, who wrote the Book of Revelations while hiding in a cave on the island. The island is crowned by the Monastery of St. John the Theologian, a fortress that was built in honor of St. John's divine inspiration. Nearby is the Monastery of the Apocalypse, where St. John is said to have actually completed his writings.
The port town of Skala serves as the hub of Patmos, and is neatly tucked behind a headland that protects the harbor. Cafes, bars, and musical clubs serve as the main entertainment of Skala's nightlife. Beach combers will want to seek out Meloi Beach, located about a mile from the center of town. The beach is shaded with olive trees, and is a great spot for a holiday lay about. About a mile further south is the relatively quiet Agrilivado Beach. The path by the beach leads to the inland village of Kambos, and from there you can walk to the totally isolated pebbled Vagia Beach.
Further south in the Aegean, 10 miles from Turkey, sits the rocky island of Symi. The interior of the island is filled with cypress and pine trees. The coast rises and falls, creating promontories that overlook the blue-green water. Hidden pebbled beaches are very popular with those who want a secluded day in the sun. The island's port town, Gialos, is a reflection of the island's wealthy ship building heritage. Neoclassical mansions adorn the steep hills, dotting the skyline with harmonious colors.
Nos Beach is the closest beach to Gialos. For a more secluded spot, head 2 km west to Nimborios Beach, a long stretch of shaded pebbled sand. Taxi boats whisk visitors to Nanou Beach, an oasis filled with snorkeling and scuba opportunities.
Off the northwest portion of Greece sits the wondrous Ionian Islands. These 7 islands have a distinct Italian feel, and are a great combination of both Italian and Greek cultures. The most popular of these islands is Corfu, which receives the most rainfall of any area in Greece, and is dotted with olive trees and exotic orchids. The cuisine is notably Mediterranean influenced, and a distinct British ambiance can be felt as well.
Corfu Town, the island capital, has a distinctly Venetian atmosphere due to the controlling Venetians who ruled Corfu for centuries. If you didn't know better, you might think you were walking the streets in some Italian paradise; the cobblestone streets are lined with cafes, and the Renaissance architecture makes strolling the narrow paths an absolute pleasure. Those with a historical bent will want to see the sculpture of the Gorgon Medusa at the Archaeological Museum. Medusa, who turned all who looked into her eyes to stone, is depicted the moment before she is beheaded by Perseus.
Corfu in the summer is the place to see and be seen. The island is teeming with activity; speedboats skirt the coast and jet skiing is a popular commuting mode. This is beach life at its most fine. The island is filled with nooks and crannies, each holding the key to a separate beach haven. One in particular, Paleokastritsa, located about 12 miles south of Corfu Town, is unspeakably beautiful. Sandy coves are set among a mountainous backdrop that gently slopes into the Ionian Sea.
The Greek Islands have been frequented by kings and served as the playground for movie stars. Each island brings a different adventure, another opportunity for discovering unknown cultures. Whether you choose the sugar white buildings that dot the islands of the Aegean, or the more European feeling you get in the Mediterranean, a vacation in the Greek islands offers ample amounts of fun and exploration!
