Vienna: Home to a Never-Ending Music!

Vienna, Austria is a mixture of art, architecture, music, and grace. The citizens feed their cravings for pastries while talking about their day in one of the city's many coffee houses. The mighty Danube cuts through the city, in tempo with a Viennese waltz, and echoes a musical song as it rolls towards the Black Sea. A vacation in Vienna includes seeing some of the most beautiful architecture in all of Europe, and dancing the night away in some of the Continent's best night spots. Begin your tour of Vienna with a stop at St. Stephan's Cathedral. This structure served as the town's center when it was erected in the 12th century. Today, it remains one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in all of Europe. The church is filled with wood carvings, altars, sculptures, and paintings. The steeple, which rises some 450 feet, has come to symbolize the very heart of Vienna.

A sight that shouldn't be missed (it is pretty hard to miss, actually) is the Hofburg Palace Complex. Known for its vast impressive courtyards, the complex is a series of buildings, and is a virtual city within a city. The Imperial Treasury houses the crown jewels and ecclesiastical treasures. One of the most impressive displays is the imperial crown, dating from 962. Studded with emeralds, sapphires, and diamonds, this symbol of sovereignty is a priceless treasure. The newest addition to the complex is the New Chateau, completed in 1913. The palace was the home of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the nephew and heir apparent of Franz Josef, whose assassination set off the series of events that led to WWI. The Spanish Riding School is housed in the crystal-chandeliered white ballroom of an 18th century building in the complex. Take time to see the Royal Lipizaner Stallions as their trainers put them through their paces in a show that hasn't significantly changed in over 400 years.

Vienna is synonymous with music. Long after Mozart's passing, the city finally opened the Haus der Music (House of Music), a museum dedicated to Vienna's musical heritage. This is a high-tech hands-on museum where visitors can take to the podium and pretend to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic. The museum is filled with nostalgic remnants and reminders of some of the great composers who have lived in the city; Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms, are just a few of the musicians represented. To hear some of these great composers, visit the Musikverein, home to the world renown Vienna Philharmonic. This ornate concert hall has seen the performance of Vienna's most famous musicians. The famous New Year's Day concert, broadcast around the world, is held here as well.

The history of art in Vienna is as rich as its relationship with music. The Museums Quartier Complex houses a series of modern art museums that have taken this rich reputation and "kicked it up a notch." (Thanks Emeril!) The Kunsthalle Wien houses cutting-edge contemporary modern art by the likes of Picasso, Miro, Jackson Pollock, and Paul Kee. From expressionism to cubism to abstraction, the museum shows the progression of every major modern art movement in the 20th century. The Leopold Museum houses works by famous Austrian modernists, including the world's largest collection by Egon Schiele. Other artists represented include Richard Gerstl, Anton Romaki, Oskar Kokoschka, and Gustav Klimt.

For some great shopping, head to Karntnerstrasse, in the city center. Here you will find oodles of shops selling products that Austria is famous for. Hand-painted porcelain and loden, a boiled and rolled wool fabric used for making overcoats, suits, hats, and sweaters, are the most popular finds.

Next to Seattle, USA (the home of Starbucks), Vienna is the coffee house capital of the world. What pubs are to the Irish, coffee houses are to the Viennese. Locals gather in droves to discuss the issues of the day, read the latest newspapers, or just watch the world go by. One of the most famous, Café Landtmann, dates back to the 1880s. Traditionally the home to Vienna's politicians, actors, and other notables, the café's most famous patron was probably the famous psychiatrist, Sigmund Freud. Café Dommayer, not far from Schonbrunn Palace, is where Johann Strauss (both father and son) played waltzes for the members of Vienna's elite. The café opened in 1787 and still retains an old world charm. Guests are served by formally dressed waiters.

Vienna, Austria is a marvelous display of old world charm and manners. You will be greeted with "Gruss Gott" (God bless you), and be sent away with "Auf Wiedersehen." It is not uncommon to have a male click his heels and bow as part of a greeting. Such is the gallant feel of Vienna. Music is as valued as commerce. Art weaves through the fiber of the city, pulling together lineages and memories gone by. Take time to hear the Vienna Boy's Choir and see why they were added to the Royal Court Musicians in 1498.
