Rome: Eternally Beautiful!
Rome, Italy has been called the cradle of modern civilization. For over a thousand years, Rome was the controlling center of Europe. Caesar was assassinated here. Charlemagne was crowned here. Rome's appeal is eternal. Today, the capital of Italy is still a centerpiece of culture and history in Europe. Visitors are impressed with the huge number of historical attractions, the incredible shopping opportunities, and the food, wine, and people watching surrounding the many squares that connect Roman streets. Like the old phrase states, "Do as the Romans do!" Bring your camera and follow that sage advice!
A visit to Rome is incomplete without visiting St. Peter's Basilica. Make no mistake: This is the richest and most impressive church on the planet. Little marks on the floor tell visitors where other churches would fit if they were erected in the Basilica. Michelangelo's Pieta is encased in bulletproof glass just inside the entrance. The dome of the Basilica was Michelangelo's final work and is the highest currently in existence. Climb to the top for an incredible view of Vatican City, Rome, and the Basilica below. Take special note of the height of the Basilica. No building in Rome is allowed to be built taller than this incredible structure.
The Vatican Museum, located near the Basilica, has over 3.75 miles of displays. Ancient statues stand guard over Christian frescoes, and the museum has an extensive Raphael collection and Michelangelo's awe inspiring Sistine Chapel. One of Raphael's most famous creations, the School of Athens, has been recently restored and is absolutely magnificent. This fresco depicts famous pre-Christian thinkers and portrays them as the most prominent artists of Raphael's day.
Vatican City is the smallest independent country in the world. At just over 100 acres and contained entirely within Rome, Vatican City, which houses St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museum, is the religious capital to over 800 million Catholics. If you want to see the Pope, the best time to accomplish this is either on Sunday or Wednesday. The Pope (when his health permits) usually gives a blessing from his apartment on St. Peter's Square. On Wednesdays he usually blesses the crowd in the square from a balcony or covered platform.
For an intimate look at the splendor of ancient Rome, the Pantheon is a must. Because this structure became a church honoring the martyred dead after the fall of Rome, the barbarians left it in peace. The dome inspired Michelangelo to create the cupola of St. Peter's Basilica. Raphael was so inspired by the magnificent structure that he asked to be buried here. Walk past the one piece granite columns through the original bronze doors, and see classical architecture at its finest.
Visitors to the Colosseum immediately understand why this structure has been called the most marvelous example of Roman architecture. The two stadiums form a circular amphitheatre that was used for everything from dramatic plays to gladiatorial competitions. The Romans could move 50,000 patrons in and out of the facility with the ease of a modern marvel.
Near the Colosseum is the epicenter of Roman civil debate, the Roman Forum. Orators would stand and espouse their current ideas, and someone else would pick up the debate. The Forum is also the common ground for Rome's famous seven hills. Nearby Palatine Hill became the home of Cicero and many famous residents.
The Borghese Gallery, once the summer home of Cardinal Borghese, is another sumptuous feast for art loving eyes. The mansion recently re-opened after being closed for 14 years, and houses works by Titian, Bernini, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Caravaggio, among others. The main theme in the collection is the connection between the Renaissance and the classical world.
In Rome, art, religiosity, food, shopping, and history collide in one of the most exciting cities on Earth. Take a stroll in the evening along the Tiber and find yourself at the Spanish steps. Robe yourself in extravagant attire while shopping the upscale streets of Via Borgognona and Via Condotti. Sip an espresso in the afternoon sun as you watch the people scurry about their daily routines. Eat dinner in the bohemian section of Trastevere. A vacation in Rome means getting your feet wet in a different culture. Dive right in;the water is fine!
