The Berry Islands: Secluded and Stupendous!

Located just southeast of the Bimini Islands in the Bahamas, The Berry Islands are a group of 30 pristine islands and over 100 cays that were for years a secret to all but the very wealthy. Today, however, the islands are attracting more and more people searching for the perfect island getaway. A day's itinerary can include sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, fishing, or spending a lazy day lounging on a gorgeous beach.

The largest and most populated area of the islands is the Great Harbour Cay. Once only visited by the very wealthy (the Berry Islands still proclaim to have more millionaires than anywhere else on the planet, per capita), the town is now full of restaurants, shops, and is a great spot for the entire family. Great Harbour makes a great jumping off point for the rest of the Berry Islands.

The allure of the beaches that surround the Berry Islands is the secluded atmosphere. These are the beaches less traveled, and offer wonderful opportunities for leaving the crowds behind and spending some serious relaxation time. One of the most populated (if that term even applies in the Berry Islands) is the beach at Great Harbour Cay. This beautiful expanse of white sand stretches for 6 miles. The other cays are in such close proximity that swimming between them in places is an easy endeavor.

The Berry Islands are also considered a sport fishing mecca. Whether your particular style is reef fishing, deep-sea fishing, bone fishing, or bottom fishing, the waters off of Grand Bahama are teeming with enough fish to satisfy any appetite. Known as the "Billfish Capital of the Bahamas," in May the islands come alive with competitors vying for trophies during the fishing tournament held in Great Harbour Marina.

Diving in the Berry Islands, like the rest of the Bahamas, is regarded as one of the world's best scuba diving sites. Whether your tastes include reef diving, wall diving, blue hole diving (underwater caves), wreck diving, or shark diving, the area has everything you could ask for in a dive site. A particularly popular spot is the Mama Rhoda Rock, which was recently added to the Bahamian National Trust. The area is a forest for elkhorn and staghorn coral. Schools of yellow trumpet fish are popular reef residents.

If total seclusion and a restful breeze are your idea of a vacation, then the Berry Islands are for you. This cluster of islands is for those who wish to escape the madding crowds, and let their troubles drift out to sea with the afternoon tide.
